Learning Nose-In
 

Does anyone have advice about learning Nose-In Hovering? I can hover tail-in, side-in left and right, but the transition to Nose-in throws me sometimes. Once it turns to Nose-in, I can bring it back under control again, but then rotating back to side-in, I get lost for a second.

I've learned on the sim to push the cyclic towards the low rotor side for left or right input and to pull to go AWAY from me when nose-in. Pointing towards me at an angle is confusing.

Simulator and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

However, if you are going to be brave and practice with your real heli, put the training gear back on and start learning to lift off with the nose facing you.

It does get easier but there is a real transition period getting your mind to accept the nose pointing at you versus the tail view.

I learned nose in from way up there. I thried to learn it with the trianing gear back on. I just could not get it. I took the gear off again and hovered it about 3 mistakes high. If I got in trouble I could swing the nose away from me. My first nose in hover lasted about 0.000000000001 seconds. After ten flights I was doing it for 30 plus seconds. Get a routine set up. Lift off, hover tial in for a set time. Then hover with the right side towards you for the same time, then hover with the left side towards you, then do as much as you can at first with nose in. Just make sure you are a couple of mistakes high or right on the ground with training gear.

One trick to doing nose in, is to move the stick in the direction the helicopter is moving.

For me, I needed to fly the heli in circuits back and forth as well as various angles of return flight before I could even attempt a nose in hover. It's still tricky but flying nose-in from across the field has helped to build that nose-in hovering transition...

I also found that just hovering the heli in a fixed orientation while walking circles around it (in both directions) helped me "get it".

Your first couple of nose in hovers are sure to grab you. I found that after I could nose in hover for 30 seconds I started flying figure 8's. that way I got used to seeing both sides of the helicopter. After you start the figure 8's, start to make them more square so you are not flying ovals but squares. That way you will get more time flying nose in.

I've found that by attaching the cowling, the heli is much easier to see. Because you are flying the nose, a bright canopy makes it much easier to control. Too bad you can't change batteries without removing the cowling. It adds alot of time between batteries, but the visibility is much better and really helps to control the heli.

I am able to hover in one spot and rotate the heli left or right all the way around. Its not perfect, but it can be done.

The tip about moving the cyclic stick whichever way the heli is moving when Nose-in really helped.
