MX400 Setup - Motor
 

I'm in the process of getting everything together for my MX400 build. As of right now I believe I'm going with the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLBS1&P=ML]Heli-Max Brushless 6 Pole Motor[/link]. I do realize that there are probably more capable brushless motors out there but does this one do the job well enough?

I had some really good responses when I questioned about [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5561109/tm.htm]ESC choice[/link] so I figured I'd run this by as well.

Helimax motors aren't very good. Get this one:

And please skip the HeliMax ESC. Castle Creations Phoenix 35.

The Heli-Max 6 pole motor is great in my MX-400. But, I replaced the ESC because the
Heli-Max ESC is not too good.

The Ammo motor refered to above is a bit of over kill for the 400. My son runs one in his
MX-450. Its very heavy and very powerful...for a 450 size heli.

I have everything "stock" as Tower sells the combo. So far I'm pretty happy with it all - though now that the weather is turning warmer I'm noticing significant sagging of power after 5 or 6 minutes. Previously all of my flights would have good power through the end of the battery charge until the esc would cut in and reduce power. I might need a heat sind and or cooling holes in the canopy.

After a couple of minor crunches and one big one, I went ahead and bought another whole MX 400 - for the parts. It doesn't take that many bent or broken parts to go over the $80.00 "total" mark. Wish tower / heli-max would just sell 2 or 3 choppers in packs.

I just built my first kit after deciding to step up from the AXE CP.. the HDX450, and I' using the stock 3500kv motor and pinion that came with it, along with the Align ESC (yeah, the one with the heat sink on the OUTSIDE of the shrink tubing so it doesn't do much to dissipate heat.... LOL )

Since I didn't look at the MX series of helis I don't know much about them, but if you can use a 3500kv motor, I'd look at the JustGoFly motor they tested in the above post. Good Power/Flight Time ratings.

Heehee. The HM ESC has the sink inside the shrink :). Won't do much either.
