Gyro, Tail Motor Question

while testing out my gyro and tail motor, I noticed that I am having a real hard time try to get the tail to hold with a rate gyro. Seems like no matter how much right rudder stick I give I cannot get the tail to move to the left (when viewed from behind). I hope this problem goes away once I install the avcs gyro. Also could this be caused by too much drag on the main rotor blades?

RE: Gyro, Tail Motor Question

is this a new bird, or one that has been flying for a while? If a while, it may be the tail motor dying.

You don't mentions exactly which bird this is. Is it the bird in your profile?

More info would help us help you.

RE: Gyro, Tail Motor Question

It is the one in my profile. It is a Heli-Max Axe CP that has had several flights some just up and down and a few hovering flights. It has a new GWS RXC tail motor that was taken out of the EDF 40 from GWS. The current gyro in it is a Century Rate gyro. The tail esc is a Great Planes Electrifly C-12 micro ESC. The main ESC is a GWS ICS480.

The only thing that I can think of right now is that the blades are so out of balance that they are causeing a huge amount of drag and therefore is causeing the Heli to spin to the Left and that the thrust from the tail rotor is not able to overcome the torque of the main rotor blades.

I hope that helps you and I will gladly accept any help that you can provide.

Thanks
Tom

RE: Gyro, Tail Motor Question

Remember that a rate gyro will only stop the rotation, not correct it. A hh gyro is needed to pull the tail back to original orientation.
Your bird doesn't sound old enough for tail motor failure to be a problem.
Some gyros need to be set to reverse. Check the instructions for the gyro and the gyro settings.
Try increasing gain until you get a response, then trim gain to liminate tail wag.

Good luck

RE: Gyro, Tail Motor Question

Sounds like you may have way too much pitch in the
main blades and the tail can't compensate.

What are you're pitch settings..hi and low?
What rpm is the main blade turning at
WOT (wide open throttle) ?

Just my .02 cents

Bob

RE: Gyro, Tail Motor Question

Thanks for the reply AirmanBob,

What are you're pitch settings..hi and low?
-8 Low and +8 High Normal run +1 low and +8 high Got new blades so I have to reset everything.

Could there be a problem in the mixing from the radio. I currently have a 7CAP but I am going to switch back to to the stock radio and do some testing to see if that is where the problem lies.

Any other help that you could provide would be appreciated
