Flipping the Axe v3

ok, so I'm no spring chicken. I fly Nitros, all kinds of electrics, I can fly perfectly inverted and keep it inverted.

But, I went out the other day, mind you I upgraded this baby to a 2.4 and put a 401 gyro on it, and tried to flip it.

What a disaster, the thing was all over the place, any thoughts on the best sensitive methods to flipping this little *******?
I see it in their video, now why am I having trouble?

Keep in mind, I put a 401 gyro on it, I made sure I had excellent -10 to 10 degrees of pitch, swash plate is level. I've tweaked everything.

It fly's great forward flight figure eights.

Thoughts?

I knew this heli was a bit more squirrelly than larger aircraft, but if a seasoned guy like you can't fly it inverted what chance do us beginners have? I've looped mine about 4 times, but was afraid to try and hold inverted. You have dual rates and expo set up on yours? How was the tail holding? Is it the stock motor and tail blade? When I flipped the stock set up on the CP, it would not hold the tail at all. The spinning would start as soon as negative collective was applied and it would basically screw itself side ways until it hit. The brushless tail motor with the HH gyro holds much better which is why I was able to loop it.

ok, what ESC and brushless setup are you using?

I'm really trying to keep it stock to prove a point to myself, but share your setup please.

That's exactly the reason I haven't upgraded to a Trex. To prove a point to myself that this thing can fly 3D. Gave up on the stock stuff, though.

Main motor is a HDX450 3200Kv outrunner driven by a Otter 25 amp ESC. Tail is an Eflite G90 gyro driving a Turnigy 10amp ESC running a 10 gram outrunner motor called a 1810 and a 4.5x3 prop. It was purchased at hobbycity.com . Beyond that, I have the Bell/Hiller system too. There's pictures under the thread titled Direct drive tail.

Did the tail hold on yours?

yea, tail seems to be holding pretty well, in idle up mode.

Normal mode if you pop the head the tail kicks out a little bit but I never use Normal mode so, no big deal.

I'm going to continue with stock and learn this little bugger. All my boys at the field that we all fly our big helis will be impressed if I can get this little piece of crap working well.

The guys call it "polishing your turd". :)

That's a little negative, but the tail performance was why I stopped trying to fly motor-tail helis in aerobatics. They're not terrible helis, but the tail response is so slow that I think a plain rate gyro and leading manually with the tail might be a more effective technique- when the hh gyro finally does get the tail moving, it then has the same problem stopping it as it did in the first place.
