The Optima 9 receiver has 8 ports labelled as channels plus a data port and 2 battery ports. What needs to be done to enable a 9th channel for a servo, gyro gain, etc ?

I have not been able to find an answer in the receiver literature, transmitter literature, RC Groups or RC Universe.

I've got the same question - is it wye'd into the battery input?

That is correct. You use a "Y" and attach both the battery and the servo to the same port.
