Default Chargers

I neeed a new charger.... Mike I have been using one of your CG325 for 12 years or so to do all my charging, I usually have 20-25 plane and helos in my hanger and almost all have 1200ma NiMh receiver packs. Two weeks ago after about 20min of flying one of my fun fly planes went down with a dead battery. I went home and did a test on 9 planes or helos and all but two were showing about half capacity or less. I charge the packs at the 550ma Nicd setting and have been doing this for many years and have had no life span problem with the packs. I have two questions,

1. Was I lucky before and really shouldn't be doing it as I have been?

2. I've gotten very good service from the CG325, what do you make that is designed for charging NiMh and does quick peak and has a efficiency tester too. Maybe with a digital display. Cost is not the object since I have a lot invested in this hobby.

Well...Hitec only makes one charger that is NiMh capable, our CG-340. It is, however a limited feature product, 4-16 cells, without an efficiency tester or digital display.

Sorry,

Glen

Thanks Glen, so I guess I've basically been lucky that I had this many years of service with my CG325 in using the lower rate charging the NiMh packs? Thank you for your great products, I like to check with you first before I by anything R/C electronics related.

Well I bought the CG-340 and I notice the batteries get a little hotter than before, even though I'm running the current at a little lower than you say to, I'm getting 115-120°F, how hot is too hot? Can I put in a recommendation that you have an audible notice when the charging is done, that was a nice feature...

The charging rate suggestions in the manual are not very specific.

What battery are you charging?

It's ok when they get a bit hot, but if it feel too hot just lower the charge rate.

Last night I charged a new 6 volt 600ma NiMh on the new CG-340 at 1amp, the lower end of your recommended charge rate. While charging i heard a funny sound and I check the temperature of the pack and it was 150°F and I bellive the sound was the cells out gassing, I think you should review the recommended charging rates....

NiMh's need a lower charge rate than nicads typically, especially the real small cells. I would drop down to .5A with those little cells.

Mike.
