"I didnt see and wire going to it"
Two types of Spectra 2.4GhzModule, neither refered to as a "7". One attached by a visible wire, the other fixed to case is wired internally. Neither will operate to designed range without the black thing on end of wire.
If Optima 7ch Transceiver, black thing on endof wireis the BODA and Tip - these do effect the range. refer

Optima Transceiver (RX) - BODA Antenna explained - as good, arguably better than a two antenna system.
Optima RX - Conversion for Indoor and Park-Flyers pending release of Minima 2.4GHz series. Hitec "Factory Pilot" Brandon Chitty uses the Optima 7 in his indoor competition aircraft (Fancy Foam Maxima) that weighs 8oz, as well as his 170CC DA powered 42% Aeroworks Yak.
BODA Antenna Tip - If tip's plastic sleeve appears separated at base and is a concern, secure with dab "Shoe Goo" or Heatshrink tube. (The base is soft solder and does not abraid the tip wire.) Mod not required toOptima with an updated tip as supplied from Feb 2010.
