Flight pack for BalsaUSA 1/4 scale Pup

Hi Mike,

The BalsaUSA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup is my first foray into large scale planes. I presently have a JR radio (JR 662) with their standard 537 (40 in-oz) servos. BalsaUSA recommends 60 in-oz servos but with no other detail. There are ailerons in both the upper and lower wings. There is a separate servo in each side of the upper wing. Single servos will control the elevator, rudder, and throttle. I'm not sure how to go here but in general, I'm leaning towards your HS-475HB servos all the way around.

I'd also like to get your recommendation for a receiver. The Pup needs only four channels to fly but I thought I might eventually add smoke or some other effect. It would be great if you could point me in the right direction for both a four and five channel receiver that is compatible with my JR radio.

Thanks in advance for you suggestions.

Bob

I'd suggest using servos that are well beyond the recommendation of the kit manufacturer. There are many variables that, but suffice it to say that for a few bucks more you can get a lot more servo power.

The best RX for the job is the Hitec Supreme 8-channel, IMO. Reasonably priced and its a bullet proof design.

I believe 6.0V power supplies would also be a plus...

I'd use the HS-635HB Karbonite geared unit.

Torque 4.8/6.0v : 69/83 oz. 5.5 / 6 kg.
Speed 4.8/6.0v : 0.18 / 0.15 second
Size : 1.6"x 0.8"x 1.5" 40 x 20 x 39
Weight : 1.83 oz. 52.1 g.

Or maybe the HS-625 Alumite metal geared unit:

Torque 4.8/6.0v : 76 / 94 oz. 5.5 / 6.8 kg.
Speed 4.8/6.0v : 0.18 / 0.13 second
Size : 1.6"x 0.8"x 1.5" 40 x 20 x 38
Weight : 1.9 oz. 55 g.
