Usually there's a little slop (play). Shims are basically thin flat washers. Installing them remove play.

Shimming basicaly adjustes the diff gears mesh. As the teeth wear more play developes between the gears. Shimming reduces this play by bringing the gears closer together. This is a trial and error process. Apply one shim behind each gear at a time. If you install to many shims the diff will feel very "notchy".

When you have play inbetween the gears they can slap back and fourth as your on and off the throttle. This cause gears to fracture and leads to ring and pinion gear falure in the diffs.

I'll tell you how to shim your diffs rather than just giving generic explanations.[:-]

Oh, I'm sorry, RCU decided that I'm not allowed to help others because some random member "quoisidicocina" or some crap like that, went ballistic one day and gave us a bad name.
Even tho I requested that member be banned for life and my name reinstated, I still can't post the helpful link you require.[]
Please contact a moderator, and request that nitro...carnage without the ... be taken off the "bad word" list.
If that happens, I can point you directly to my diff shimming thread.
Otherwise, it's about 100 pages back in this forum.[]

I'm a naughty boy, and useless, good thing RCU makes people like me go away![&:]
