RE: spur gears
Given you taosted a new set-up, it sounds like the problem might not be in the spur gear, but in the subsequent drive train. With the motor out, how easy is it to make the wheels turn using the spur gear? How does it coast?
What kind of driving do you do? Have you got some big, grippy tires?
I'd check out the entire drive train to ensure you're not getting any extra drag.

RE: spur gears
Did you properly gap your gears? Too little gap and the gears can bind and melt from friction. Too much gap and the gear will strip. When you gap your gears, stick a little strip of paper...like the kind used in your printer...between the teeth. Press them together tightly and secure the engine screws. ZAM! You just gapped your gears properly. I'm still waiting for my spur to strip or melt.

RE: spur gears
now ive got the same problem as Chello. its not my gear mesh though. mine is set right. its the spur gear slipping when i hit the gas. and the nut is not loose. its tighter than its suppose to be because it slips even more if its at the stock position.

RE: spur gears
I would suggest fitting a new spur gear with a new pad, also, fit a new nut on the spur, the nut should have a rubber bit in the end to hold it where it is set.
Tighten it down all the way and then let it off a 1/4 turn.
I haven't heard of any problems with this set up. Many people with Wasps or Picco's tighten them all the way down and leave them, to compensate for the extra torque.

RE: spur gears
It sounds like your slipper clutch was not properly adjusted in the first place, causing it to slip too much and melt from the heat generated by the excess friction.
I'd say just pick up the parts you need to rebuild the slipper clutch assembly, rebuild it and be done with it.

why cant hpi just spend a couple more dollars and put a steel spur gear in the savage ss and 25??!?!?!!!! they are such a cheepo company, they dont replace any parts, even though they say it is 'under warrenty'.

RE: spur gears
i think that hpi just hates me cuz they wont replace anything...glow plug, 2 cylinder heads (buttons), dual brakes, stock brakes, pull start, carburator, and the brake linkage. we are all hated in new jersey!
