Default engine locked at TDC.

hey guys
i have a problem with my x with a stock engine.
i have about 4 gallons thur it.
when i try to start it sometimes the engine locks at TDC like it flooded.
but the engine is not flooded. i start and run the truck fine. shut it down and put the piston
at BDC. when i go to restart the piston locks somethings and the button pops out on the roto start.
if i move the flywheel by hand off TDC. sometimes it will spin. sometimes it locks again with the glow ign on.
when i tired to spin the engine with the roto without the glow ign. on the engine spins fine.
i even tried spining the engine without the glow ign on. as i`m spining the engine with the roto and put on
the glow ign it locks up. but not all the time.
i was able to start the engine a few times and once its running. it runs fine.
anybody have any ideas whats the problem?????

With 4 gallons through it, it cant possibly be tight enough to mechanicaly lock. Therefore, it is more than likely a flooding issue you are having. How do you know its not flooded? Maybe your glow plug is too long and its beating a hole through the piston??? Although you would definatley hear that happening.

hey ken
thanks for the come back. i know its not flooded beacuse i run the truck.
shut it down by pinching off fuel line or plugging ext. put piston at BDC and when i go to restart it. it locks up somethings only
when the glow ign is on. if i leave off the glow ign the engine spins fine with the roto.

Basically the retaining pin holder that held pin in place had a piece broken off with scratched the internals and had caused my motor to lock in place. After I took the motor apart I was trying to take the con rod off and it actually snapped on me. But I got an STS now and I'm doing fine. Hope this was not your problem and your problem is much easier to fix.

hey jose
thanks. i just took off the backing plate about 2 weeks ago beacuse i had to replace the one way
and i couldn`t get it off the shaft. so i had to pull apart the back of the engine. i replaced the starting pin , spring and shaft.
the engine looked fine. but i think i`ll to pull it apart again.

Cool thanks, if you can throw in some pics that would also be nice. You can save yourself allot of typing with a few clear pics .

Yeah, I agree, it sounds like an internal mechanical problem to me too. When you dissasemble it be sure to check the wrist pin, the piston where the wrist pin goes, the retaining clips, the bushing where the con rod connects to the crankshaft, the conrod ends for wear/elongation and the crankshaft bearings for play.

Default RE: engine locked at TDC.

hey guys
ok late last night i pulled the engine apart.
i`ll be dammed. i can`t find anything wrong.
starting pin and spring are fine. piston, piston wrist pin and connecting rod is fine,no egged shaped connecting rod hole.
crankshaft fine. i even pulled apart the clutch bell thinking a clutch spring broke. engine bearing fine. i found nothing wrong.
tonite i`ll put engine back together and try it again.
maybe i got the engine set to rich. i don`t know what else it can be???

hey basher
i put the engine back in last night. it started up no problem.
but keep on stalling out. i started it a bunch of times and it didn`t lock up once.
but now i got a new problem. i got an air leak from the carb.
no matter how tight i try to lock down the carb. its still loose.
i`m going to have my lhs look at it. i need some new o rings for the carb and the pinch rod. i think???
i think the HSN needs a new o ring too. the needle is real loose in there.
i`ll post up whats up when i have the guys look at it. thier good guys at my LHS.

thats a common problem with the hpi carb, you will most likely need a new one. Dont get the same one again or it will happen again. Im not 100% sure but i think a good replacement is the mach 26 carb or so i've heard. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I did a little looking around on tower and ebay and i dont understand how tower can ask for 50$ for a new s-25 carb when you can find them on ebay for as little 2.50$ (starting bid). At that cost just double it (and a little more) and get an sts 28.

thats what i was thinking too.
the only thing that sucks is. i just put alot money into the stock engine.
new stock pipe, new header, new one way. the rest of the new stuff i could use
on a diff engine. new clutch bell with new clutches, new clutch bearings.

Default RE: engine locked at TDC.

The pipe and header will also work on whatever engine you get, might not be a perfect fit but it will work fine. I use stock parts on all my engines and the only thing i need to do it add a little plumbers tape around the silicone gasket between the engine and header to prevent any leaks. Since the tape is teflon it doesnt melt, it just gets hard once its taken its shape and gets heated.
