LRP Spec 3.

My opinion, it's the best motor for it's money. I use the LRP in my race LST and I can barely control it on the track.

well both are great motors...

heres my take on the two

the LRP is built in Taiwan, uses a 13 mm crank, has a 1 port exhaust, the port structure is a 6+2.. the Picco is made in italy, uses a beefy 14 mm crank, has 3 port exhaust, and the port structure is a 5+2.......

The LRP has a broad power curve with an apparent midrange and top end rush, the Picco's power comes on much earlier and the motor pulls to max RPM in a very linear fashion, you dont notice any midrange or top end rush though but the Picco will actualy rev slightly higher then the Spec 3, but you dont notice its top end the same way as you do with the Spec 3.... Off the bottom the Picco is much stronger then the Spec 3, the Picco's power comes on very early with instant off idle throttle response, the Spec 3 will feel sluggish off the bottom next to the Picco till it hits its stride once it hits the midrange .. The Picco also has amazing throttle snap, the power is very on tap and ultra crisp, the Spec 3 has a more subdued trigger feel..... Another knock against the Spec 3 is that its a fuel hog, but the Picco isn't much better to be honest... The Picco has a overall better build quality, the fit and finish on it is noticeably better then the Spec 3....I like both motors, the Spec 3 feels like it has a better midrange and top end, but thats because the Picco comes on soo strong off the bottom that there is no surge in the midrange, the Picco just pulls from off idle all the way to top in a very linear and powerful fashion..... One knock against the Picco is that it is sometimes too powerful and snappy, when racing the motor can be a handfull at times....

I've read and read and read lots... So I can't say anything based on experience.. But my feeling is for the LRP over the Picco.. You almost never hear negative things about LRP's, but the occasional Picco-hater does seem to pop up now and then and swear they're untuneable..

Not that I go %100 by forums, but reading between the lines, I'd take the LRP... That said, both should be great - as in, you can't go wrong with either....

The LRP will turn your truck into a monster. Have fun keeping that truck on all 4s! Barrel rolls and massive wheelies are in your future.

well IMHO the Picco is the better bet.... I can tell you first hand the Picco is easy to tune, and no more difficult then a Spec 3 IMHO.. The Picco actualy has a better built carb with less chance of air leaks...... The Picco is also more powerful, and more efficient.... Also due to its broad power curve the piccois also more forgiving on needle tune, a half ass tuned Picco will still make insane amounts of power....

I am speaking from experience with both engines, not basing my opinion off heresay... I have worked on and modded both brands of engines, and feel i have a much better case to offer my opinion........ No other person offering advice here has even run a Picco 28, so take their comments with a grain of salt...

if you looking for the most power for the best $$$ the Picco is a much better bet then the Spec 3.

+1

I have two .27s and a .28 and they are great engines, crazy ammount of power and has been easy to break in and tune. My second engine was a picco 27 and with hardly no exp with nitro i had an easy time all around. So far that engine has seen about 8 gallons, overheated a couple times and it even had sand inside once but the pinch is still nice and tight and fires up right away. The lrp would be my second choice but i've never ran one, just heard good things about it on the forums. I think either engine would make you happy but the picco is probably better quality.

So am I. I had a Spec 3 and I couldn't keep the truck on its tires. It broke the metal output gear in the trans and completely wasted my rear diff and I wasn't driving the truck all that hard when all that happened. It's a powerful engine. I can't compare it to a Picco as I've never had one of those, but the LRP is no slouch and if you have a speed addiction, it will feed it.

they are both great motors no doupt.. the Spec 3 feels weak on the bottom compared to a STS 30..and the STS 30 feels weak on the bottom compared to the Picco 28.... The Picco 28 is extremely powerful, noticably stronger then a Spec 3, wether thats a good thing or bad thing IDK...

It really doesn't matter... pick either one and you'll have more power than you can effectively use in most Savages. Bragging rights are nice, but having the absolute strongest engine out there isn't always the way to go.

These things don't last forever anyway... get either one, and then try the other one out after it dies.

good point chronic..., i say both engines have very strong points, these are very respectable engines, needless to say, there are a lot of contended and satisfied users of these two marvelous engines...IMHO, as a savage owner myself, as long as you are happy, and you truly enjoy the truck, you really dont need very bexpensive engines.

your points gentlemen are well taken...i really appreciate your insights.

ill be buying the lrp...

p.s.

is there a website that sells the cheapest NIB lrp that ships worldwide? lmk

Good choice. The Picco is an excellent engine, but it costs more, and any advantage it might have in power delivery is wasted unless you have the truck setup to take advantage of it. The better build of the Picco might equate to another gallon or so of fuel before it gives up the ghost, but if you aren't an experienced nitro tuner then you probably won't be seeing the max service life out of either one anyway.

As far as power delivery, the Picco seems to pull more like the LRP spec 2... just with more topend.
