Default Just got a savage x

Hey everybody i'm new to the savage forums, i finally gave up and sold my warhead to get a savage. But my question is, what gearing would you guys reccomend? I was looking at the robinson racing 16/ 48 setup because i figured that would be a good all around setup and it's a good excuse to upgrade to a steel spur gear. Your thoughts?

I would personally do either 16/47 or 17/48.....I think those would be about the same, no? I like a little more top end on my trucks. Both of my trucks wheelie very easily with 16/47 gearing. XL has LRP30 and X has stock F4.6

His has an Axial in it, 15/47; 16/48 or 16/49 is probably pretty close. Glen

Hey guys thanks for your help, i ended up going with 16/48. It has a good balance between low end and high end and is still a wheelie monster

If you decide you want to run bigger tires or a little more speed, you now have a base to work with. 16/48 is a 3.0 gear ratio. Just divide the bell into the spur. So to go faster a 16/47 would give you 2.93, not a big step, but one you would defintely notice or 17/47 a 2.76 gear. Same thing the other way, if you wanted more power for a larger tire or to run in soft sand, 16/52 would give you a 3.25 ratio. The numbers are kind of confusing. In this case the larger ratio number is actually the lower gear or more power. The 3.25 for example is 3.25 engine revolutions for every one revolution of the transmission input shaft. The stock gear for a XL with the 7" tall Terra Pins is 16/52 or 3.25. Glen

I run 20/47 with a moderatly ported stock motor and the wheelies still creep up when I floor it...Oh, I'm using the HD Steel Spur gear and the Vented racing bell, both from HPI.

What kind of clutch and tire are you running. I suspect you are talking about the F4.6 and not the K4.6. There is a huge power and rpm difference between them.

I'v got the HPI Aluminum shoes with, as I said, a vented Racing bell, and I switch between the stock GT2 tires and REVO tires...And, yes, it's the F4.6. I've also got the Racing Suspension kit from HPI, so the suspension geometry is alittle different.

Normally what happens when guys start to push the upper gear ratios is that they smoke the clutches trying to run anyplace that is not hard packed. The short tires are helping you out a lot, but I suspect you do not climb many soft dirt hills or run in deep grass surfaces. The load becomes more than the clutch can handle.

You'd be correct, I only run in my yard, which I keep relatively short, or on the local Soccer field, which is also kept really short...I also removed the set screws from my shoes, so I get a little later engagement and still get a pretty good punch off the line.
