Savage 25 shifting problem please help

I have a savage 25 that is not shifting into second gear. We had it out yesterday and ran 3 tanks through it and it ran perfect. Now today we go to run it and it will not shift into second gear. I have tried to tighten the slipper clutch and that does not help. Any ideas?

Check:

Slipper clutch could be worn
Engine may need retuning, especially if the weather has changed dramaticly << Most likely
Shift points have got moved << Unlikely, unless you have been fidling
Different terrain meaning it is harder on the engine.

The engine most likely needs re-tuning, it is not reaching the high RPMs required to shift gear. Either retune the engine (best bet) or change the gear shift point (works but is a quick work around).

Well first of all did you read the manual? The shift point can be adjusted on the tranny. Is this a new truck? Were those the first 3 tanks ever in that truck? Maybe its just gotten faster and it shifts so soon you dont hear it. In some cases a new tranny will need to be broken in in a matter of speaking, the parts will loosen up a bit as they are stiff from being new.

Try slowly accelerating to see if you can hear it shifting, if not then refer to the manual on how to adjust the shift point. New engine, different gearing and stuff like that will make it that previous settings just wont work.

Worse case scenario is you have a problem in the tranny but i doubt it, if all else fails then open it up but try the other tips first.

If you want some more info on changing shift points, theres part of the HPI DVD on my website, that covers it.

Can be quite useful, help with tuning aswell.

EDIT : It's listed under 'The Rest'

I don't think it is an engine tuning issue. The weather has remained the same here the couple of days and it ran perfect yesterday. The engine does come up to speed quickly but it will not kick into second gear. This is a used truck so it is not the first 3 tanks in it and it had been well broken in pervious owner. Thanks

OK then, you'll have to adjust the shift points.

Try messing around with the shift points then and let us know how it goes.

Problem sovled!!!! The engine was way to rich. somehow the was a puddle of fuel in the carb and the air filter was soaked with fuel!!! So it had to be way rich as soon as I rang out the filter and got the excess fuel out of it and the carb it ran fine and shifted right into second gear. A simple problem!! I am gald I did not take it all apart. Thanks for the advice!!!
