Beginner Problems
 

Maybe this something for the general Simulator forum but since I'm new to AFPD I thought I'd start here.

What are realistic setting for the wind speed, turbulence, and thermic, etc. I have been flying the pt40 and the pt40tow. I've been able to fly around and land with a certain degree of success. Obviously, you want it to be 100% but that will come with time and practice.

At first the settings were set to 0 (zero) and then I remembered people say that this isn't realistic so I bumped up wind speed to 2.3 m/s, turbulence to 1.8 m/s and thermic to .5 m/s. Are these realistic? At what point to say in real life "these are not flying conditions"? I've been working with the pt40tow the last couple of nights but it's been just a bear to land. It porpoises (sp?), dips side to side while making the approach. Am I not using enough power coming in a landing?

Also, what are reasonable expo settings? I've set elevator and aileron to 30 and 40% to try to prevent the extreme movements and give a smoother feel.

Any other beginner tips on basic flying? What should I be working on or how should I be training? Any links you can point me to?

I dont know about AFPD but on AFP those wind setting arent very acurate at all. They geneally blow steady in one direction, not at all like the real thing where they are usually up and down.

Personally I dont bother. If you are a beginner I wouldnt either, get the stick movements and the general flying right first, then worry about the wind. I dont use wind ever, unless Im slope soaring in the hanggliding scene. I mostly practise 3D and it is impossible to get it right at slow speeds because you get blown around everywhere.

Hi,

wind isn't steady, if you switch on both wind speed AND turbulence.
Open the second window with the wind display and you can see how it varies in speed and direction.

For a beginner's training under calm conditions I suggest (in AFPD!):

wind speed 0.3 - 0.6 m/s
turbulence 0.6 - 0.9 m/s
thermics 0.5 - 1.5 m/s
transmitter 98 % (this acts different in AFP, set it to 99 or 100% there)
