AFPD Interface
 

I have had the AFPD Deluxe for right at a year.

Earlier this year the y-adapter failed and was fixed using a Radio Shack plug part.

Yesterday, AFPD as well as Game controllers in Windows control Panel failed to recognize the radio. The problem is apparently not in the adapter cable I have continuinity, but in the main dongle cable. Windows recognizes it as an Ikarus interface and AFPD will start the program but gives the message that no radio is found.

I don't think I can fix this problem.

What is the address to return for repair or replacement?

What is the turn around time?

My son is working on a routine for a local event and it would be great to have as little downtime as possible.

JR XP 6102 and a JR 4 channel basic radio. Both worked yesterday.

The plug is a Radio Shack 1/8" solder phone plug, part #274-287. I used this plug to fix the dual adapter that the AFPD came with. I developed a bad connection in the y-connection of the supplied adapter as shown here:

I have a feeling that the cable is broken internally right where it comes out of the plastic box as seen here:

Hi Reid, am I correct to assume that your usb cable is the "old style" version as shown in your second pic? The "new style" cable does not work with JR. Is the radioshack plug a stereo or mono type? Thx

Yes, it is the second photo and it is a Radio Shack Mono Plug.


HL has an adapter for JR Radios.for $15.00, AFP02. I have no problem ordering one, if I know it will solve the problem.

Hi Reid, did you modify the stereo plug connector in the original usb interface cable? Since you're good at soldering, I will try to send you a diagram later on some changes you can make to the stereo plug. Pls send me your email address. Thx

I did not have to modify the plug. I just used the Radio shack plug. I just soldered one lead to one tab, and the other lead to the remaining tab. I don't think the plug is the problem, I checked continunity on both leads.

I recommend soldering the post of the plug to the lug as well. The post can become "open" due to mechanical loosening after plugging/unplugging many times. I will send you two diagrams later, as soon as I get home.

Hi Reid, I would advise the following:

Unscrew the rubber cover of the plugs in the y-adapter (you have one radioshack mono and one right-angle mono) and of the plug (stereo) at the end of the usb interface cable, and solder the post to the lug for all three plugs. Then try your AFPD and see if the adapter works.

Found it. The wire was broken inside the insulation right at the crimp.

Hi Reid, good to hear that. In addition to reparing the broken wire, I hope you also did the post-to-lug soldering as this will help prevent intermittent signal connection. It's great to hear that AFPD has been instrumental to your son's aerobatics achievements. Keep up the good work!
