Default Life of servos, gears in 35%

I got Hitec 5645 servos in my 35% Edge and there is slop after 30 long flights. Just curiuos how often everyone is changing servos or gears? I started with JR 4721 on the wing. Then I tried the metal gear conv. 2721. These were garbage and got bad play after only a few flights. On one servo the pin in the case elongated the hole but the other side just the gears went.

What i've found is they dont last long- It seems they take the most beating from an idling engine rather then the actual flying. My bme shakes more than others at idle though too. The interesting thing is HItech charges you to replace gears - while so far JR "brings up to factory specs" for no charge. So you might save money in the beginning with Hitech- but you can get gears replaced for free with JR. I fly both and like both but just thought I'd point that out. It also seems that the hitech geartrain last a little longer than JR, before they get unacceptable slop - each has its own benefits.

Hi,
Flying a 30% cap I replaced the gears once a season, the slop never got unacceptable BUT was certainly not desirable and this seemed a happy compromise...."preventative maintainence" and all that!....btw these were Futaba S9206 servos. Very happy with the performance of these servos in all!
Regards
Rich

The warrenty is 3 years - But from my understanding on 8411's the warrenty doesn't matter as long as they were bought from an authorized Horizon dealer. In the radios forum Danny Snyder (jr rep) is very prompt at answering questions - He's the authority on this stuff I think. -- (Just read that question again- I've never got free replacement servos - when you send the servos in they replace the gearsets for free with 8411's.)

I have not had Hitec charge to replace any gears in the 5945 servos. As to your question I do not think that the 5645 is an acceptable servo for a 35% airplane. This might be why you are getting the slop so quickly, also what kinds of throw are you using and are you doing alot of 3d with extreme throws. This will also cause the servos to wear alot quicker it is harder on the servos with extreme throws. I personally use 2 Hitec 5945 servos on each aileron of a 35% plane.

Hello All and Jon Leyland - how are ya ? sure do miss ya buddy - we have got to hook up next yr for sure. Are you going back to the Null ? Hope we can make it ?? Any how, on the subject - we just had one of our 2 Hitec HS 5735MG's lock up[X(] on us in our 36 % AW Edge on rudder. Did not cause a crash but lost rudder control. After looking it over , found the metal gears real worn down which caused the lock-up. The local HS is sending it back for reapir or replacement ? This was after 2 seasons of pretty hard flyin and 3Din with no greasing or any other maintenance done. The other rudder sevo (same 5735) is still working OK , but we are replacing it also to be safe ! We hope to put new JR 8611's in our new 40 % RC Extra 330LX. Keep having FUN !!
Rod & Chris in PA.

Hey Rod,
Those 8611's are pretty awesome - I'm using them in my 109. I like Hitechs also but it seems they charge for gear replacement. Good to hear from you and I'm glad you're doing great!
take care,
jon

I have just put my 200th flight on my 5945's on my 33% 540T last month and they are still going strong. They are starting to show a little slop, so the gears are going to get replaced before next season.

All in all, I have been very impressed with them especially with the beating they have been through.
