RE: 2005 Tucson Shootout stories and write-up
Was there any reason why a few pilots used 100cc class planes instead of the full blown TOC size? Looks like the QQ Yak really dominated.

RE: 2005 Tucson Shootout stories and write-up
I was told by one freestyle pilot at the shoot out, that given the low cost and construction time, the 100cc plane just made sense.
Personally, given the number of freestyle pilots I have judged I think the 35% plane works better than the 40% plane. Yes the larger plane does have a better impact, but the smaller plane can flop, drop, pop and get it on better overall (got all that). I love a great freestyle flown with any size plane, but I think the smaller plane can do some outragous maneuvers that as far as we know, can't be done with the larger planes.
I saw a 35% plane do a FULL POWER dive from about 2000 feet into a blender and somehow all the parts stayed on! Doubt we will be seeing that on a 40% plane soon. BTW, it was a cool maneuver.

We had a blast with Kevin Miller and (cough cough) Bill Higgins.

LOL.....somehow I just knew there was a jab comming somewhere.... :-) My hats off to everyone that ran the event. As Will has mentioned , the contest was one of the smoothest run events I've ever attended, and the competetion was just fantatstic. From the first days of practice with Mike, Peter and QQ to the final Jabs Will and I were giving each other as we stepped off the podium, I can't remember having more fun with a greater group of folks.

Ditto to all the kudos already mentioned, Mike, Dave, Bob Sadler, Anna, Mrs Jesky (sorry I don't remember her first name), all the sponsors (too many to list) and most of all the competitors. Even with cash on the line, not ot mention huge prizes, it really seemed as though everyone showed up to compete and have fun. Will, you kept me smilin' Even after a frustrating zero in the unknowns, I was laughing with my tail off with you and Marian. You, Bill, Joe, Jeff and Wayne flew great all week, congrats to you. It was cool to see the unlimited class at the point where you just could not make mistakes if you wanted to be competitive.
I was really impressed with how a lot of the guys in freestyle adapted their routines and actually incorporated the wind into them. Bill H's knife edge elevator and skidding tailslide were awesome. As for the 35% verses 40%, Dont think that the placements indicate 35% will score better. Fact of the matter is no matter what Mark was flying he would have been up there. He was on. One of the things we saw with tthe 35% that was a bit of a bummer was some of the guys treated them as if they were expendable, just down right abusing them. It was entertaining, but definitely not a good trend. It would be terible if you had to torture your plane to get decent scores in a freestyle.
Glad to hear everyone made it home safe. Again thanks to all who made it possible. An absolutely great event. Good seeing all of you and I look forward to the next one.

I had a great time taking pictures of the event. While I was stuck on the outer edge of the fence I was also to capture a number of memorable pictures. I tried to get as far out to one side as I could as to not obscure the view of the crowd behind me. Here are a few examples:

FYI: The full set of pics is available at the Cirkus.
