Default Mockingbird Aviation 35% Extra 260

I lost my Ultimate Biplane this past weekend at the South Texas Shootout so I have a BME 110 Extreme that is looking for a home. [8D] I fly pattern competitively but after the fun I had in Houston Im wanting to continue to develop my skill in IMAC as well.

I want to get your opinions on what the best IMAC or IMAC/3D plane out there is in the 100CC class. I have already been given a couple of recommendations, but I thought I would throw it out there and see what else comes up. Im not really too worried about cost, Im more concerned with getting a quality airframe that will perform well and present as cleanly as possible. Im also not opposed to buying a used airframe as long as its in excellent shape and is a proven performer.

can't go wrong with the Aeroworks 260.......no work to get it in the air.

A 110 would be good power

I haven't flown the Carden 35% Extra but if I had the money I'd replace my comp-arf Extra with one.

Hey Mike. Aerotech sells the 35% 300, very similar to the 42% 300 I flew at the Houston IMAC.

Mike:

That mid-wing 300 like Ryan has should probably be added to your list. Man this is fun, spending somebody else's money for a change.

Thanks Ryan,
I went and checked it out. Looks really good. I will definitely add it to the list.

Right now Im really unsure of exactly what I want to do but Im trying to do my homework. I will end up making a decision pretty soon, but I just cant decide if I want to invest in a trailer/Suburban and go 40% or stick with a 35%. My heart says go for it but my conservative nature is holding me back. If I do what I really want to do I will have a 40% Yak and a new trailer soon[8D]. Over the last few years I have slowly sunk deeper and deeper into the hobby, its almost inevitable that I end up with a 40% plane,,, or 2,,,, or 3,,, sooner or later.

Im really looking for versatility for IMAC and really good 3D performance so its a tough decision.

Either a Somenzini 102" Yak or a Radiocraft Extra (if you can find one) would make you happy I'm sure.

Well, I have made my decision. Im buying a 35% custom built Extra 260 from a fine gentleman in Abilene, Texas. Im driving up with a friend this weekend to pick it up. Heres a couple of pics. Thanks Daniel for pointing me in the right direction. [8D]

With my BME 110 the predicted weight RTF is about 23pounds. Should be a really great plane that will last me a couple of years if I dont get stupid with it.

Oh, I was listening. For some reason this plane was really appealing to me.

Its basically 100% built, hinging is done, servo mount boxes are installed. Even more, I am bringing my engine to Abilene with me this weekend and Jim is going to machine the standoffs and mount it for me while I wait!

Im really excited about this plane. You guys probably already know this just from seeing it but its basically a Dalton Aviation design. It has the foam ribbed wing contruction and the wings should come out well under 40oz RTF. I'll weigh them after I finish and see what the actual weights come out.

I have a nice color scheme in mind so I cant wait to start the covering process next week.

I was out at Jim's house yesterday. You made a good decision. Jim is a Master Builder. Anyone that has watched him build knows he is a perfectionist. You will see this when you look at his work. I can assure you the aircraft is light, straight, and strong. Good luck with aircraft. Your making me jealous.

Just curious, where are you guys flying in Abilene? Many years ago my father was in the Air Force and was stationed at Dyess. We flew at a site close to lake Fork Phantom. Does that site still exist? This was in the early 70's.

Well, I have the plane... I made the 8 hour trip to Abilene and it was well worth it.
Jim had the plane all cleaned up and ready for me when I got there. It is a real work of art. Everything is laser cut and hand crafted to perfection.
Jim even spent about 2-3 hours machining custom aluminum standoffs for my engine that will allow me to remove the engine without removing the standoffs. Now I have a lightweight set of standoffs that give me the perfect gap between the cowl and the spinner. The wings were every bit as light but well constructed and I was told that they were.

I guess I will start by installing the hardpoints in the control surfaces and from there I will cover the wings and start working on setting up the all of the linkages.

Lots of little projects to get the plane completed but I must say that it is more complete than any ARF I have ever owned minus the covering. Everything is built, the only building I have to do is mounting the canopy, installing the hardpoints and thats just about it.

This is going to be a lot of fun. Plus I think I made a new friend with Jim, he is a really neat and likeable guy[8D]

Progress,
Yesterday I installed the hardpoints and this morning I drilled and tapped them.

Today I covered the bottoms of the wings and stabs. It came out really nice and smooth, not a wrinkle. I love Ultracote.

Any suggestions on how to attach the canopy to the hatch? I have been told CA and that slow white glue stuff. Any better ways to attach it without frosting the canopy using CA or getting glue everywhere using the canopy glue? I would like to use epoxy but Im not sure of how it will stick.

Mike,

Use the canopy glue.
It dries clear and the excess can be wiped away with a damp paper towell.

You will regret using CA or epoxy. I promise.

What do you use to hold it in place until it dries?

I have been searching for a web pictoral on how to do this. I have never installed a canopy before and I want to be absolutely certain that I get it right.
