Default 2007 Sportsman Known Discussion

I wanted to start this Thread to discuss the 2007 Sportsman Known. It will be test flown this weekend, but from what I see I like it. 2007 Will be my First year to fly Sportsman. We can have some open discussion on the sequence once everybody gets a chance to fly it. Please give pointers and feedback.

It looks like manuever 5 will be nice on windy days you can adjust yourself in or out and choose which direction to fly it.

Also looks like you need to gain altitude on 2 to set you up for 3.

Three looks to me to be the hardest time will tell.

I won't waste a lot of time on practicing 10 its only 4K

Hey Dangerous, you may want to try a 2 of a 4 pt then push into a 1/2 loop for no. 2 before you say what's the hardest one to do (with precision)! I agree that No. 3 is really tough - you do a 1 1/2 positive spin into a teardrop, then 1/2 roll on a 45 upline and push to level. Verry interesting.

I think the sequence committee has done an outstanding job in coming up with this year's sportsman sequence. It flows as well as last year's and I thought last year's was great! Now on to do some practice since you are my competition for next year!!

Bobby

Its definately stepped up a notch, are we going to se a partial roller in the unknowns considering intermediate has a full 1 roll roller.

Hi Andy.... I think you are mistaken when you say that Intermediate has a FULL one roll roller. Complete 360° rollers are ONLY flown in Unlimited. The roller you may be referring to in Intermediate is a 90° one roll turn.

You can access the Unknown catalog for each class on the IMAC Website http://www.mini-iac.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=90
Each class has certain maneuvers XXed out, & you won't find those (XXed) in any Unknowns flown in an IMAC contest in that class. Bear in mind that the Sequence Committee use these catalogs when constructing the Unknowns. If a CD (in 2007) prefers to construct his/her own Unknown for an IMAC contest, they will have to submit the Unknowns to the Sequence Committee for approval.

Hope that helps.

I wish we could do what the fullscale pilots do for unknowns. 10 pilots submit an aresti a day or 2 before the unkown is flown. The maneuver is at there choice and must be in their class in there catolog. So if my favorite maneuver is a cuban 8 and Andy's is a diamond and we submit that then there is 2 maneuveres. We need 8 more. Then someone puts it all together to make sure they flow correctly. So actually the maneuver you choose you know you will score high on it becasue you more than likely been practicing it. This is how I understand its done in full scale. Wouldnt that be cool if we could do that? Like on Saturday some guy walks around and collects 10 figures from the first ten sportsman pilots registered. Theres your unknown. Might make you want to register earlier...

I am not certain you understand what IAC does. It sounds like you have mixed Unknowns and Free programs together.

As I understand it an Unknown in IAC is just that. Unknown, just like for us. They too have a catalog of allowed figures by class.

The higher IAC classes also fly a Free program which each pilot draws himself/herself. That is submitted for review to ensure that it follows the Aresti Catalog, is legal construction, and class appropriate. Every pilot flies their own Free Program.

At a contest a pilot flies 3 times. The Known, the Free program, and the Unknown.

And before everyone gets all excited, the manpower needed to check free programs simply does not exist in IMAC at this time.

What texomalaser is referring to is how Unknowns are created at an CIVA/FAI World Aerobatic Championship event. This is not done at IAC contests other then the U.S. Nationals. At the Nationals this is done in only the Unlimited and Advanced category (the categories in which there is an FAI/CIVA World Championship event).

In IAC any member is allowed to submit unknowns that can be used at future IAC contests. IAC has a library of unknowns that they have been maintaining for years. These are what is distributed for contests. We also have a catalog of allowable unknown figures for each category.

Bill, he is not mixed up. At the Nationals the IAC flies by the international rules for Advanced and Unlimited. 10 names are drawn and each pilot choses a maneuver. Then everyone has a certain amount of time to submit a sequence using those maneuvers. They are allowed a few linking maneuvers to get in the correct orientation. An example would be if most of the maneuvers start upright and end inverted it is necessary to add a half roll here and there to get in the proper orientation. This is really cool in Unlimited because competitors throw out really crazy hard stuff that they have practiced. It becomes somewhat like stump the chump.

I honestly don't know if local contests are handled this way or if it is just the Nationals when following CIVA rules.

Regards,

Dan

On the simulator I have flown it and noticed on figure 9 you might want to climb pretty good because that 2 of 4 takes a bit of time to present well...Ill be flying it this weekend for real...

What settings do you use on the SIM? Look at ground, Look at aircraft, zoom in etc?

I tried it on the sim but couldn't really tell where the plane was.

We practice yesterday, it seems busier than previous years. Manuvers 4, 5, 6 gets long if not careful.

All,
If you look at the sportsman unknown matrix avalable from the IMAC website. A positive snap from inverted is a legal sportsman manuever.

It makes my but pucker just thinking about it. Up elevator and same direction rudder and ailerons from inverted. Should this really be a legal sportsman manuever?

Has anybody ever seen it in an unknown? Should I waste my time and nerves practicing it?
