Hi i have just gotton my hands on an extra 300L 24% (ya i know 1% bigger and i could post this in the giant scale). Owner says it came in at 12 lbsS with an mvvs 26cc i have found all kinds of engine suggestions everything form a 1.20 glow all the way up to a 35cc gas. the plane is VERY tail heay. with the 26cc in the nose the ignition and the engnition pack were installed direcctly behind the firewall and the other pack about 1 inch behind the cg so i could easly balance it out if i added more wight in the nose. (bigger motor?)
(i have been told that a saito 1.80 will not balance this model evan with the rx pack in the cowl with it... making it very hard, almost, impossible to land)
What would you use in this plane..
(looking at gas for its economical running )

My Feedback: (90)
ZDZ is about to come out a 40cc FAI gas engine. Check it out at www.rcshowcase.com.
You best option to balance it out probably will be a gasser heavier than the current 26cc one. The other option will be to extend the engine out a litt bit by spacers, and remount the cowl.
I used to use a RCS 180 motor (3.5 lb) on my Gas Pattern ship and it is balance ok. I am waiting for the new ZDZ 40cc FAI to cut the weight.

Try here:

Be aware that the F3A is a fantasy engine at the moment, R/C Showcase have had this on their site for many months now and will not even estimate an actual availability date or pricing. If you want an engine now, you should look at their regular 40cc RE:

Personally, I would also look at the Brillelli 46GT:
http://brillelli.com/brillelli_engines_010.htm
It is vastly cheaper than the ZDZ, is very light, makes good power and the service is superlative. Downside is that it is a side intake/side exhaust engine, so it will probably require some fitting into your cowl.
Either one of these engines (especially if fitted with a good canister exhaust) will rip your Extra around (at 13lb or so) without an issue. I wouldn't get hung up on adding some engine weight, it sounds like you need it for balance anyway and the plane is big enough to carry it without a problem.

well the 46gt would torqu roll it at a high idle. So it may be an option but, think at 13lbs with a 73 inch wingspan the wing load is getting up there. at what point should i be consinrned about it..?

Someone in the giant scale or gas engine forums put a Brillelli 40cc in the Wild Hare 73" Edge (73" span, 1090sqin) and it came in somewhere over 12lb (maybe over 13lb, I do not remember exactly). He was very pleased with the way it flew and said the gas engine version was fantastic. Just a thought regarding wing loading and size...

Mike at RCShowcase told me around middle December of 2006 that the FAI engines are in production and should be available in the US market earlier this year.
