33% pirate extra what engine ?
 

i'am about to get my 33% pirate extra ready to fly in imac this year and i was wondering what engine you all would recomend for it ? i was thinking about a zdz 80 or a 3w 75. what do you all think ? i would also like to do 3D with this plane also. any input would be appreciated.

Plenty of power / doesn't require high octane fuel / holds value better / easier to set up than a rear intake/

ZDZ-80 single. Most power in 80cc, lightest weight, narrow profile is easy to fit in cowl, bulletproof ignitions. Think about the exhaust system first. It has a large influence on power. The ZDZ will lose a lot of power (500-800 rpm) on a restrictive exhaust.

I have an aeroworks 33% Extra powered by a DA 100 A/C weights 25.5lbs. I feel this is a great combination. The problem with the smaller engines is the power level requires to complete upline maneuvers. The smaller engines requires almost full throttle causing prop rip thus affecting your sound scores.

I don't think the prop cares which engine is spinning it - rip happens when the prop rpm exceeds some value (that value depends on brand and size of prop). Sure a DA-100 would be great, however for inexpensive power/weight, ya can't beat the ZDZ. That's why they're so popular.

By using the DA 100 you can accelerate straight up at half throttle. This keaps the prop from reaching an rpm wich would cause rip. With the smaller engine you need full throttle causing the prop to reach an rpm were it will rip. By the way I agree with y ou that the ZDZ is a great engine I had a 80 single it had unbelievable power. Due to a mid air I no longer own it. ™g
