DP Edge 540 CG question

In the intructions it say that the cg should be 6 inches back but it is really nose heavy like so nose heavy it falls off your finger. I flew it today and it needed almost no trem needed and inverted it needed very little down. Is this 6 inches back correct? Thanks for your time.

RE: DP Edge 540 CG question

If the plane flies well both upright and inverted (as your post indicates) then you have the CG correct. Minor corrections would be all that is needed for sequence flying.

what i am saying is that is the 6 inches back correct because on that when u try to hold it on your fingers to balance it it falls of forword like real fast it is extremly nose heavy at that 6 inch mark im wondering if it has been moved up because he fund a mistake

how well does the edge knife edge i ask because my flat tail version of the aw edge does not have enough side area to do a k-edge loop?

If the plane were very nose heavy it would require an excessive amount of down when inverted. In the ones I have flown the cg does not need to be as far back as the instructions indicated. The worst one was the H-9 version and it did have incorrect information regarding the cg. It was really too far back and the more fuel was burned it got worse. It sounds as if the way you have it set is fine. The only way to check it now is to fly.

RE: DP Edge 540 CG question

I've been flying a DP Edge for a couple of months now and I've got mine balanced at about 5 1/2" back.

From DPM's website:
"We have had a couple calls from 540T owners that felt the 6 inch CG is too far aft.
Therefore, we would like to recommend that EDGE 540T START at 5 inches and work your way back to what you prefer."

Sounds like you're pretty close where you've balanced now.

RE: DP Edge 540 CG question

Six inches is way too far back. I built my DP edge (with an OS 1.6) and when I went to balance it (at 6 inches) the nose came down - way hard. I installed weights in the tail and mounted the battery as far back as I could.

This didn't seem right so instead of flying the plane the next morning I got on-line (here) and found several posts that the CG should be 5 inches and not 6 inches. I took out the weights out and it balanced to about 5.25". I took it out to our field and had a well known Unlimited IMAC pilot test fly the plane. He said it was still tail heavy and didn't think it would have been flyable with the CG at 6" (consistent with the other posts I read). I have since replaced the the OS 1.6 with a DA 50 (sweet) and the CG is at 4.75 inches. It flies well but is probably a little nose heavy.

I have a DP Edge w/ a Moki 2.10 and six inches is too far aft. Mine is balanced at 4 3/4" from the leading edge.

I would think everyones is going to be a little different...depending on prop, spinner, engine weight and battery pack placement. I say start where DP says and adjust to your style of flying. Good Luck!!

Friend of mine is flying the DP Edge at 5" back with a BME 50, and it flies very well. The first time we flew it at the recommended 6" figure was almost the last time it flew...it was scary!!

If you do be careful not to crash because 6" is tail heavy.
