GP Extra 300 snaps
Hi guys, i was wondering why my GP Extra .40 seems to snap better rolling to the right rather than the left. My cg is still quite forward and i havent quite got the recommended rudder throw yet, but your thoughts would be welcome.

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
It could be a couple of things.. Is your rudder throw exactly the same both directions. And second it could be the side to side balance of you plane instead of front and back.. I had a .60 size extra one time that was giving me some similar problems and I had to add
3 ounces of weight to the right wing tip and it mad a world of difference:D |
RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
engine torque also has an effect on snaps

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
I have yet to finalise all of the setup, now i have the cowling on i can redo the cg and do a lateral balance. I need to fit a longer servo horn to increase the rudder throw to the recommended max, then recheck that. I would have thought the engine torque would assist left snaps as that is the way it rotates.

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
yup thats it
its noticable on a small .50 size model I have, I think the effect would get more pronouced on bigger models with more torquey engines........ |
RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
It's gyroscopic reaction from the propeller... all planes snap better to the right because the gyroscopic reaction during the yaw to the right keeps the nose from pitching up too much and burying the snap. In a snap to the left the gyroscopic reaction causes the nose to pitch up even more and the snaps tend to be slow and mushy... the solution is either to use less back stick when snapping left, or after you begin the snap unload the backstick all the way to neutral or even foreward slightly.

That sounds like it then, i seem to remember it pitching more on left snaps, i will try less elevator when entering them if my thumb will do it! Thanks:D

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
What is the easyest side to snap for an inverted snap then?

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
Left Rudder... I fly in unlimited full size IAC and I definately favor doing inside snaps to the right and outside snaps to the right (which is left rudder) It's a fault of mine, I should practice the other way more often.

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
Do you use aileons for a snap with a full scale airplane. I fly advanced IMAC and seem to come up with little rudder, little elevator and lots of aileron for a good snap that does not change heading too much, even in a vertical upline.

RE: GP Extra 300 snaps
I have two GP Extra 300's both exhibiting a better right roll than left.
One has an OS .91 four stroke other has Saito 100 I second the engine torque theory. Both planes have excelent manueverability and great handling. The Extra with the Saito 100(Extra Strong) will land better because the engine is lighter and allow a slower landing speed and also has unlimited vertical. |
