Engine for the new GP Extra 300S!!!

Hey Guys

I am getting ready to purchase a new engine for the Extra and am trying to decide on the OS 1.60 or to go with the Moki 1.80. I would like to be able to do some 3D but don't want the wing loading to go crazy. Has anyone flown the airplane with the Moki 1.8? Let me know what you think.

Thanks Maddogg

I would go with the Moki. More power!

Hey Bud,

What size prop can you clear on that plane??

That should not be a problem.
Bigger tires will solve that problem if any.

That Moki 1.80 barely makes more power than the OS 1.60, but it weighs a POUND more! If you just HAVE to have a Moki, use the 2.10, not the 1.80 now you've got a lot more power for the lot more weight penalty.

If it were me, though, I'd probably go with the OS 1.60 for much better all around flying.

Hey Bud,
Changing 'props' is not the question; Changing engines IS!! But also comes the problem of the SIX inches from the firewall to back of the spinner on that aircraft. That kind of limits your choice, unless you don't have a problem 'cutting the firewall??
The O.S. 160 is a great running/power engine in its class....for nitro. I am considering going GAS for that aircraft, but the six inch firewall to spinner/plate IS the issue. You can go with a new 2.15 gas (35cc)Mvvs engine on 'regular mounting rails' would be good too. I was thinking BME 44cc can clear a 20" prop 2 blade, 18" three blade, OR a /BME 50cc gas, wants a 20-22" 2 blade, but also a little heavier. I think the goal for engine weight will be ~ 3lbs. To Bad BME hasn't released the new BME 55 Extreme yet, that thing is projected to come in @ 2lbs for the engine + 1 for the muffler!! Trying to go with the NEW 50cc gas engines i.e. DA, 3W(24cc, 42cc,50cc) is a little more tricky because they are rear inducted AND you'd have to custom-cut the fire wall to fit!! AND both are not the lightest in the class, but probably the smoothest running!! Also, what kind of flying are you planning to do with it....OS 160 can do most things well @ 3-4 hp....I WANT '5' horses!!
I'd still like to know; "HOW BIG A PROP CAN YOU CLEAR WITH THE STANDARD WHEELS IT CAME WITH"...with a couple inches to spare!!????

Sincerely,

PanchoBiplane

Don´t you want Gas engines?

If not, how about Saito 1.80?

I built the GP 300s with the OS1.60 and it flies great. If you want gas go with the Patty Wagstaff (which I have also built and flown) because you'll want the larger wing to handle the wieght. I also recommend the Patty with a 50cc if you want 3D as the extra power will make it out perform the 300s in that style of flying. For scale aerobatics the 300s with the 1.60 is a nice combo.

I'm also looking at the Great planes 1/4 Extra 300s Wagstaff ARF. Has anyone tried, or know if the Zenoah G-62 engine will fit in it, and how it might perform with that? It is a gas 3.8, which the specs say is the top end for that ARF. I don't know if that engine will fit in the 6 inches requirement stated before. Any thoughts??

Ed,
I've answered this about twenty times. So now my answer is go over to the humongous Patty thread on that plane in the "ARF" forum and do a little reading. If you skim through the last 5 pages of the thread you'll see that engine discussed. Also if you use advanced search and enter Patty, G62 you'll get some information. (Click on "Combine topics and replies" and make it "topics and replies" and it'll take you to specific posts. Doing this will give you several opinions on that combo.

I currently have a mejlik 23-8 on mine and I wouldnt go any bigger than that ground clearance wise. I put a 24-8 bme prop on it for testing but it is a little close for comfort for flying, you would really have to nail every landing. 22" is no problem at all

Dear Seno'irs,

I have recently bought a GP 160 300s ARF for myself!! As I've stated before 'THE' biggest challenge is to fit an engine into a SIX inch" <firewall to the back plate of the spinner>...PERIOD!! Very hard to find in GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyway

As far as the G62 ??? guy out there....NO WAY Jose' !!! That mucho engine weights tooooo much!! and you can get a BME 50 that is 2 lbs lighter and JUST as MUCHO-POWER!!

Buddy says that he's already swingin' a 23"inch blade, SO a 22" X 10" should do the el'tricko!!

22" X 10" WOOD if you REALLY want to fly 3D.........

Also, for you el'wussy's out there that still think that the OS 160 is enough.....Pancho says get an RCS 'F' 180 gasser....that engine has about the same 'rated' horsies as the 160 BUT, is GAS, and FITS into a 6" space with room to spare!!

But as for Sen'oir El' Pancho Biplane,

IT WILL BE A; BME '50 CC GASOLINE' BABY, for my GP 160 300S Geno Soucy ARF!!! I just love this aircraft already....I don't want ALL THAT El'-GOOY Nitro-MESSO on my MUCHO GRANDE' GRAPHICS!!!! No Sir, the only mess I'll be making will be the SMOKE SYSTEM I'll install, insteada ofa little bity smokea trail from a nitro engine...

Ahhha, I can Smell the terrifico petro-el'desil stench now......ZOOM ZOOM!!

Hasta luego Muchachos!!

Pancho,

Just figured I would toss in my 2c worth.. I have a Fuji installed on my Wagstaff 300 and I can hover thru a full tank with a 22x10 apc.. Also you have no problems with the 7inch from spinner to firewall.. The plane was tested with the Fuji 65 anyway's.. Also if anyone has any questions on making the Fuji run and start with no problems just ask.. The gap between the mags is wrong..:D

RE: Engine for the new GP Extra 300S!!!

I had both a pre-production Magnum 1.8 and stock Moki 1.8 in my 1.60 300S. Both produced tons of power with the Moki on a 19x8 MenzS outperforming the Magnum with an 18x8. Neither needed the Cline pump or crimped exhaust fixes that many people have done with the OS 1.60. With the Moki, the Extra tended to land longer than the Magnum, but otherwise weight was not an issue. The plane flew solid, but not heavy, with very predictable landing. Tracked immensely well and presented beautifully in the sky. With the Moki, it would get into ground effect and just keep on trucking. I put mine in several months ago. It's not good to come in behind a tree on final approach!

If anyone needs one, I have a NIB Cowl and NIB Decal Set (I purchased an extra set when I switched Engines) for this plane that I would happily sell cheaply. Please email if interested.

The FPE 3.2 works great on the GP patty, with a MenzS 22x10 prop.
