Best, loudest prop for IMAC Freestyle?
 

Hi!

I am getting together a freestyle routine to fly at a couple meets this year. What I'd like to know is which props are both good for freestyle flying AND make a bit more noise to raise the excitment factor. Are square tip props louder...or bark louder? Since noise level is not a factor in freestyle judging, I figure I'd check into adding noise.

And yes, I understand the need for reducing noise levels in IMAC. I take noise precations when flying patterns.

As a pilot and a judge, I'd be more impressed with the elements of your flight that separated you from the crowd. "A bit more noise" wouldn't raise the excitement factor for me because ANYBODY can choose a prop that will bark (no skill involved there). Show me manuevers that your competitors aren't doing, and do them well, and NOW my excitement level is through the roof.

Spectators seeing RC for the very first time WOULD be impressed, but the last time you heard it, did you think "OH WOW!!!! He's ripping the prop!!!). hehehe.....I didn't think so. It might be fun, but it's old hat.

I am certainly not going to base my freestyle on noise. That wouldn't make sense I know[X(]. I have been practicing and practicing and practicing my routine. Now it's time to put the icing on the cake so to speak... smoke and noise... maybe some other theatrics.

I have to admit I know its not going to get me points for just the noise, but man it sounds cool! I am going for the total presentation. As with airshows, part of the excitement for me, aside from the maneuvers, is the noise (along with the smoke).

Maybe I'm just delutional. hehe

Sooooo, any advice on what makes a prop louder?

Mike McConville used a Bolly prop on a DA-150 at our Imac contest a few years ago. Not sure of the size, but it was the loudest prop rip I've ever heard during a freestyle. Nearly everyone had their fingers in their ears, and a smile on their face. If you want to make the most noise, use a low pitch prop with a large diameter - this will get the tip speed up in the supersonic range. Bolly carbon prop or Menz-S wood.

Loud props save lives.....or something like that....:D

I think you should try a Menz. Excellent performance for freestyle. Awesome howl (too loud even for most pilots, but for a freestyle, what the heck). They spin up great, pull like nothing else, and are comparatively cheap cheap cheap on the wallet. For a DA150 a 32x10 Menz gives incredible performance. Few people use them because of the incredible howl and they don't give the carbon flair.

How bout the Prince Aircraft P-tip prop?Those are the loudest out there.

I agree about the P tip, I have one. It will rip as long as you have a motor strong enough to rip the prop.

Loudest bark i ever heard was when I used a Pro Zinger 26X10 on my Brison 6.4, everyone was holding thier ears! I went to a nice quiet Biela after that.

Get a bit smaller prop then you would normally need and it will rip. any prop.

I understand what you are trying to do since I am also trying to get a routine with the noise factor in it. Of course its easy to control since you can allways throttle down.

Yep! I just think the sound of a prop winding up as the plane comes back around from an outside knife edge circle at full throttle gets the adrenaline pumping! Along with smoke and music....IT'S SHOWTIME!!!!!

By the way, here's my freestyle plane for now....
A 31% Colombo Anderson Extra 300L w/3W 75 (I'll save freestyling with my 40% for a year or two!).

You want the smallest blade the engine will carry and not blow up. Fuchs props are great for this in my opinion (two blade). Menz and Mejzlik are both great to, narrow blades and fairly light.

For your 75, I would recommend a Fuchs 26x10.
My 100's (DA and 3W each) love a Fuchs 27x10 (nice and loud, especially the 106 QS, WOW!).
For 150's, a 32x10 would be awesome.

P-tip props look nice but they have a very wide blade, which bogs lesser engines down, my 106 rips a 27x10, but my older 100 wouldn't come close to a wrinkle. If I had a 26x10 PAC prop, it would be nice and loud on the 100. Essentially you would want to lose an inch of diameter from your regular prop for max sound.
