Question about 2004 Basic Sequence
 

Maneuver #7--2 turn positive spin.

Let's say I'm heading left --too-- right.

What should my throttle be set at? How do I introduce/enter the spin? Nose high? Mushing into a full wing stall while flat and level? What is a "positive" spin-- as opposed to a "negative" spin?

Are we using ailerons, rudder, elevator? All 3 control surfaces? Only rudder and elevator?

I guess I need to stall the wing to start out, but really unsure how to perform the maneuver.

1st one down "IMAC Flying and Judging Guidelines" and go to page 31 and start reading. It is a very good explaination of how to perform the snap/spin maneouver. This is also the document that the judges are supposed to be using as a guideline for judging criteria. So, if you perform it the way the manual say's and can explain it as such, you should do well.

You may download and print this document. Very helpful to read and know these rules IMO.

I get the feeling that the judges around here are tough. Been talking to one and he gives out zeros for aileron rolls that are too fast. Not that wgeffons was too fast, I thought it was just right. Not too fast and it was a nice slow roll that wasn't off track. Guess I'll find out at my first meet in August.

What plane/engine combo is that?

If a judge ever gives you a zero for rolling too fast please ask him/her to show you the roll rate criteria they base their score upon in the rules.

I just read through the rules last night and I don't remember anything in there about how fast or how slow you can roll.

You can't be judged on the rate of the roll (too fast or too slow) However, you can be judged on a CHANGE in your roll rate thoughout the roll. I'd kindly ask the judge about this. Perhaps he meant he down graded someone because he finished the roll too fast (i.e., faster then he started the roll). Even then a change in roll rate is a deduction that still would not result in a zero.

Take Bvmjethead's advise and download the judging guide. Trust me you will learn a lot. Take it with you to the meet so if there is any question to a rule, you can share it with the judge(s).

As for your original question on spins. They can be tough maneuvers. Each plane can fly them differently so there is no easy way to tell you how much of each control to use. One hint I have learned that helps is that once your wing actually drops, let your elevator go back to neutral as you add in your other controls usually full ail and rudder). Practice them a lot and if possible, have an experienced pilot and/or judge help you out when you practice them.

Very good advice brushing up on the Judges manual. Its amazing the descrepencies you see in judging. I've heard off handed comments like that from pilot / judges that just make no sense if you know even the basics of IMAC judging. If someone is at all serious about competing in IMAC or SCAT, do your homework and learn what the judges will be looking to downgrade. Even if you fly consistent, if you are getting consistent downgrades it really is discouraging to not be getting better scores. Usually it is very simple for a basic pilot to dramaticaly improve their scores by just knowing what the pefect "10" manuever is suppose to look like. I believe Doug was involved in the low key "contests" they used to have in CA where you could fly in front of the judges and get a score, but then discuss with the judges what downgrades you were assesed. It seemed like a very cool idea to me. We copied the idea a while back here in AZ and had a basic only contest for new comers... it was great fun. See ya at the Shootout....... Bill
