IMAC vs. Pattern
Don't know if this has been brought up before, but will ask anyways.
What's the main differance between IMAC and Pattern flying? Is it just that IMAC planes are scale? I really want to get into precision aerobatics, and dont both IMAC and pattern do this? Thanks for any input, RichD |
RE: IMAC vs. Pattern
The basic difference is the judging criteria and the planes. Other than that, it is the same.

RE: IMAC vs. Pattern
IMAC and pattern are precision aerobatics. The key difference is, as you hit on, IMAC is 'scale aerobatics' where pattern is not scale. This means that IMAC closely follows IAC form in sequence construction and judging criteria. All sequences and K-values are composed from the FAI catalog, where pattern has its own list of maneuvers and K-factors. Also, pattern is limited to planes no larger than 2mx2m, and no heavier than 5kg. IMAC has unknowns for all categories except Basic. Pattern is now doing unknowns at the FAI level at the NATS and World Championships, but to the best of my knowledge they do not do unknowns in lower categories. IMAC additionally has the optional freestyle event at the end of most contests, which is a seperate event. Pattern has the new Artistic Aerobatics, but it doesn't seem to be popular in U.S. pattern for the most part.
Hope this helps, Baron |
RE: IMAC vs. Pattern
So maybe its IMAC that I really need to be doing? I absolutely LOVE the way the Edge 540T looks.

RE: IMAC vs. Pattern
Pattern is cheap (?) planes burning very expensive fuel.
IMAC is expensive planes burning cheap (?) fuel. Unless it's electric pattern, that's very expensive planes burning cheap electrons. |
RE: IMAC vs. Pattern
If you like precision aerobatics, and you like the way the Edge looks, then you'll definitely love IMAC. [8D]
