Split elevator set up.
 

My extra 260 has split elevators, using 2 separate servos. I currently have a 6EXA radio, but am buying a 7CAP tomorrow. The 7CAP will NOT allow me to control the two servos separately, so no trims for each one. How difficult is it to do the setup all mechanically, and use a Y harness?

The basic question is, do I "need" to be able to trim the servos separately?

You can use a smart fly equalizer for that setup. It will allow you to reverse one servo.

dont need to reverse them, they work as it is with a Y harness.

My question is, for IMAC compititions and stuff, to set up the plane better, do I really need to control them seperately, or will a Y harness work just fine?

IF THE SERVOS GO IN THE TAIL THEN YOU WILL NEED A REVERSING Y TO SET THEM UP RIGHT.IF YOU DON'T THE GEOMETRY WILL BE OFF AND IT WILL NOT FLY RIGHT.PLUS A REVERSING Y WILL HAVE A POT TO ADJUST THE CENTER OF ONE OF THE SERVOS TO MATCH THE OTHER ONE

take a look at my servo set up... no, everything isnt tight, I am just getting things ready, using some servos laying around to do a test initial setup.

now looking at the picture, if I used a reversing servo Y, things will not work correctly.

My question is this....

do I NEED to beable to set individual trims for both servos in the radio, or can it easily be done mechanically? Reason for needing to know this is, the Futaba 7C will not individually trim 2 elevator servos, no matter how I try to mix them.

If you have all the geometry perfectly matched from the two sides it should not be a problem. The servo horns will have to be exactly opposite of each other. The control horns are both going to mounted at the same location in conjuction with the hinge line. If you can pull full up, down and then go to center and have each position match. then you will not need seperate trims. An Equalizer will allow you to match the throws perfectly.

The difference in what you are doing, I would say yes, go get a 9C. You can trim it in the air during one flight with the 9C or make many flights to get it right on the ground with the 7C

you don't need the smart-fly equlizer, just use the Y harness. it looks as if the plane you are putting this in is not much bigger than a .60 size plane. go with the y and save the weight and complexity. but that's just my opinion.

You dont need an equalizer. You only need a y with a servo reverser!!! I even thought i needed the but then i realized the geometry and didnt need anything extra!!!

I STILL cant figure out why you guys say I need a Y with servo reversing. It works just fine without reversing one of the servos, because the way the servos are put into the plane. :D

Althought its all a moot point being that i am getting the 9C radio that will take care of all this for me.

The point being missed by several posts is that they did not look closely at the picture you posted. The servo arms are pointed to the same side, therefor you don't need reversing at all. What they are referring to is when the 2 servos are mounted below the stab. In that case, unless the one servo arm is pointed up and the other down, you would need a reversing y-lead.

Your choice of the 9C is good. Although the 7C is not bad, it is less able than the 9C.

You don't need a servo reverser.
You should connect the servos to channels 2 and 8 with the 9C and adjust the end points and sub-trims to get them to match.
