Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
Hi,
Ive got a ZDZ 50 with Falcon ignition. It can be very reluctant to start sometimes. My ignition battery is a 4.8V 730mAh Ni-MH pack. Would starting be easier if I moved to 5cells + would I have to regulate the pack down to 6V? On the ignition unit it says 4.8 - 6V. Thanks, Angus |
RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
NO- hard starting is almost exclusively a carburation thing
Typically the engine and carb is dry -getting the choking to flow fuel, then adding spark is the best bet. |
RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
Angus,I have a ZDZ 40 and it was a bugger to start. Now I choke her and give full throttle until she burps. Then I pull theh throttle down to idle position and open the choke.2 or 3 flips later she is running.Have found that the ZDZ likes to be really wet to fire.Hope this helps.Other then that it is a sweet little motor.

RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
I to have found they like to be really wet. Think the problem today was that my battery was almost flat (started stuttering in the air) but even when its charged it can take awhile to get it going.
Dick, are you saying that it is best to keep away from 6V/it's not necessary? Angus |
RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
They say not to use a 5-cell pack, unless it is regulated to 6 volts max.
I would use a 4-cell pack of higher mAH capacity, or a Li-Ion with a 6 volt regulator. |
RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
I used a 6 volt system in my 50 rv, also I rolled the prop around until a few drops fo fuel would come from the carb, I would flip the prop and BAM!!! She would fire in 2-3 turns, and ran like a champ, I also made sure the timeing was set like the factory recommends, this is important to starting as well, and out of time engine won't start easy.

RE: Falcon ignition/ZDZ question
A 730 mAh pack has a high internal impedance. I'd look for a low impedance NiCd pack or a larger low impedance NiMh. The 1950 NiMh packs I get from NoBS batteries only have 5 ohms per cell... that's pretty low. I lot of NiMh packs have 25 ohms per cell... that's 20 ohms total vice 100 ohms total... what's that mean? Large voltage drops when running.
Also, my 80 was a bugger to start until I re-check my timing setting... it was way off. Runs like a champ now!!! |
