DA-50 noise restrictions?

Well... going to be jumping into a 50cc plane with a DA-50....

trying to decide on pitts or tuned pipe...

The pipe would be nice for the quiet and the performance...
but the Pitts is in my budget.....

but the question is...

Is there anywhere that a DA-50 with a standard DA pitts muffler would be violating any noise requirements??

Thanks
Exeter

Anyone??

RE: DA-50 noise restrictions?

I can only offer observations, since I don't have a DA50. The DA50s that I have seen are pretty loud w/ a Pitts muffler. I have a BME50 w/ Pitts muffler, and I think it too is pretty loud. The Pitts mufflers also sound rather "harsh". I also have a 3W-75 w/ a canister muffler that I have a hard time hearing when someone else is flying their .40 size trainer. The pipe would be much better sound wise than the Pitts, but the Pitts is probably still "legal" -just much louder than your other options.

Hmmm...I've sent an email to Imac too.....

looking at a pipe, but that is almost $200 versus the Pitts

appreciate the input.....

We use a stock muffler on our DA-50. We did the sound check per the AMA regulations and are A-OK. :)

With what prop?

Thanks, Ron

We use a carbon fiber 23-8.;)

We have several mufflers for the DA 50. we have a compact Pitts and our quiet Pitts. The Quiet pitts has been independently tested at 95 db at 9 feet and 94 db at 9.8 feet. I do not know what prop was used when tested. cost is $89.99 and $139.99 plus shipping

Guys

Noise test result done today with a brand new calibrated noise meter.

C-ARF Extra 2x2 with DA50 and KS1060 swinging a 2 blade Mejzlik 22x12 at 6400rpm.

First test 94.9db at 3m on grass with aluminium spinner
Second test 90.9db at 3m on grass without aluminium spinner!!!

Each test was done 3 times cause I couldn't believe my eyes. I was told that an aluminium spinner made a lot of noise but.......

Cheers

Buzz

Wow.... 4 decibels from a spinner???

I plane on running the Mejlick(sp?) 23 x 8 if they ever come back in stock... and have a Petes CF spinner... wonder how much of a difference that makes?

RE: DA-50 noise restrictions?

I have been around the Da50 with the stock muffler and there is no way it pass db unless the engine is over proped to it produces no rpm.

I was running the slimline pitts with a bolly 22-8 and it was loud. I switched to the KS 1060 pipe and a Bolly 23-8 prop and it is better but it still is not quiet. But it is good enough.

Use a Mejzlik it will be even quieter. Bolly's are one of the noisiest props around.

Cheers

I am ok the way it is now. Mejzlik 23-8 are not easy to come by around here. I dont really want that heavy of a prop. The bolly spools up fast.

I've heard of pattern guys spraying the inside of the aluminum spinners with exapandable foam, then carving out enough room for the prop/shaft/nut etc. Would be an easy experiement.

Toprudder

Tried it. It only made 1/2 a db difference. 94.5db.
I have just bought a beautiful 3 blade true turn spinner for my 2.6 Extra and I can it use it at the field because it takes the noise over 96db!!
