Name That Laser
 

Does anybody know who made this Laser kit? It has a 100" wingspan. Wings are foam core.

I would like to know anything you can tell me about it.

I'm not sure it's a kit......I'm not sure of anything.
The wings are solid foam core and it has a fiberglass cowl.
I am currently flying Sportsman with a loaned airplane and wondering if the Laser would do the trick for now.
Somebody suggested it may be a Godfrey. What do you think?

Is it a kit?

My first reaction was that it is a Ulery laser- the fuse contstuction - sticks and stringers- is the same as the Ulery design. I know that there are plans (or were plans) for his laser but I'm not aware of any kit for it. I built one from plans about 10 years ago. Great plane. The plans show foam ribbed wings- not solid foam.

My other thought is that it looks like one of Norm Casella's lasers- he sells them framed up and lives back in the NJ/PA area.

That is probably a plans built laser. Are the wings solid foam or built up foam? I remember a set of plans in the 90's that had a fuse built up like that and foam ribbed wings. I just can't remember the name. He may still advertise in highflight, if I remember he also carried a couple stearman plans also.

I agree with DMichael. It looks like the original ulery design, except ulery's engine box did not extent to the landing gear plate (a la carden). I fly at the same club as Norm and his lasers have a foam turtle deck.
Is the turtledeck straight from the back of the cockpit area to the firts former?

Jack Strickland sold plans for a laser that size as well as plans for a 40%er.

Strickland thats the name. I think it is very similar to the Ulery design.

Any idea what the norm for a engine would have been when this was designed? I am always curious to see how much bigger the norm engine is now.

Do you have a picture of the cowl? The fuse looks like it was scratch built from plans ( there was a company that sold plans for a 50% and a laser the size of your back in the 90s and if I remmber corectlly the constroktion looked a lot like your fuse) the wings look like they have the same airfoil on them that Mr Godfrey used on his 3rd scale laser but he used foam ribs so the wing could be scratch built also or if the Span is actually 98" it could be a lanier set of wings.
I think a laser is still a great plane for sportsman IMAC it is a Little slower than the 300s and gives you a Little more time to think wile going threw the pattern. If you do not mind me asking what do you plan to power it with?

It is hard to really tell It could be a Old Godfrey one peace cowl . but from that angle it really does not look like it ( but a lot of company's built cowl for the lasers). Do you no what it weighs right now (In the bones so to speak)? A friend of mine flew a laser powered by a ZDZ 80 in unlimited some years back lets just say you will have a LOT of power. I had a G62 that was converted over to glow that I competed in sportsman (Back then that was popular ) . I have a modified Godfrey laser that we put a air foiled stab and ruder on and lightened it weighs in at 17.5 pounds and is powered by a G62 and will fly the sportsman pattern with no problem but scents your laser is a Little bigger you will probably be a lot happier with a Little more motor ( 4.2 or the ZDZ 80 ) . I scratch built a Strickland/Godfrey Laser back in 94, Fuse looks the same except for the engine box. My wings are built up foam rib. Still fly her and she flys like a dream and will hover at a little over half throttle with a good but well used G-62 weighing in at 18lbs 8ozs.

What prop are you using on the G-62?
Any suggestions?
I have a G62 with C&H Ignition and Slimline Pitts muffler.

Mejzlik 23-10 Carbon Fiber is the best out of the 3 or 4 props that I've tried. And my G-62 is an old B&B with stock muffler without ignition and spring starter.
