RE: South Central Basic Bootcamp

The UPS guy delivered my engine and other goodies at 8:30 PM last night! What's up with that? I thought they only ran overtime during Xmas?

No joy on Little Rock, Dan; at least for me. These hurricanes have done more far-reaching damage than just lives and property. Our state budget is shot; I haven't been able to make any paid overtime in many months, and that was my "play" money. If things don't turn around soon (and there's no way they will; they're just going to get worse), I'll be doing good to get to Crosby. Buying this engine shot my wad, so to speak.

As for weight, my H9 Extra 260 weighed right at 14 pounds with the 1.60 set-up and TNT aluminum gear. I'm not too happy about the added weight, since that will affect its wonderful landing characteristics, but there's no free lunch.

Mounting this thing is going to take some study. Without even measuring yet, I can see that the mount bolts are going to get into the metal angle supports inside the motor box. 10-32 blind nuts are pretty much out of the question.

Got lots to learn, as this is my first gasser. At least Tobe has a clue and can help, so it shouldn't be too ugly...:D

I reverted back to my bad luck days last weekend I forgot to hook up an aileron and flew a whole flight wondering why my rolls loked like sh%t. The next flight my spinner came off on the first upline and took out the prop. today my gear got stuck in a hole while taxing and cracked the new prop.

Hey No problem guys, Just me saying thanks to all that came and gave there time. Howie your certificate is coming, Jarrod put the wrong name and is redoing yours. You should have it soon.

I have gotten in some practice since the bootcamp. Learning the new sequence has taught how much more trimming I still need on the extra. I won't be able to go to the crosby contest since thats the weekend Lisa bought the cruise for, but I should be at the next one in Houston and Lit. Rock.

Dan

I haven't been back but I will call Doug and ask him if he has seen it.

OK

I spoke with Steve Reinke from Waco. If we want to have a practice day of flying before the Crosby contest he said I would have to give him some dates and he would run it by his club officers. He didn't see a pprblem with it, We could have a good day of flying on a Saturday and then head home in the evening. What do you all think????? I was thinking about the 3rd weekend of February the 18th .....any comments

Guys

We have been invited to have an IMAC Practice at the seagoville field. The president Warren Young called me and stated he has pilots in his club that are interested in learning. The date of the 25 of feb is good for him. He is running it by the officers at the next meeting but has said he sees no problems at all for us to fly there. He said he will invite general spectators to help expose IMAC. The field is open enough to fly at and has over a 600 foot runway. www.dallasrcclub.org

Well what does everyone think about this. It will give you a chance to practice and maybe we can get Rick and Wally and Keith to come if they can. The Crosby Contest will pnly a couple of weeks after this.

Any takers on the invite by the Seagoviile club?

Their field is centrally located and close to several folks

Hi Eddie...I'll be there. This is Greg from the bootcamp. Remember you and some others helped me with my fuel tank issue on my little red Extra? I really appreciate everyones effort in helping me. I never did get to fly though due to an extension connector going bad while I was breaking in the Saito 100. But I guarantee I'll have a bird ready to go for this. Finishing up a WM 60 Extra and might have my Gene Soucy Extra finished and broken in by then!

Hey Greg

RE: South Central Basic Bootcamp

Steve

did you get engine installed and running yet?

LSP972 02-04-2006 08:49 AM

RE: South Central Basic Bootcamp

Short answer; not yet.

Long answer: As I suspected, the mount will require some thought and finagling, as the metal angle support brackets inside the motor box are "in the way". I had to order some long bolts; those arrived Thursday. Tobe and I did the mount stand-offs yesterday; another coat or two of polyurethane will see those ready to use.

Once I get the engine actually mounted, then I can do the rest of it; relocate the throttle servo/linkage, re-plumb, install the ignition and switch, etc. The learning curve on gassers is extensive; every time I turn around, I discover something ELSE I didn't know about that is important. So, I'm feeling my way along. Some would call it a methodical approach; some would call it anal; some would call it just plain slow.:D

Take your pick; bottom line is I'm not rushing into it. Once my Tower order with the Hayes neoprene line and rubber gas tank stopper arrives next week, I THINK I'll have all the components I need. I'm hoping my machinist buddy can open up the Tru-Turn spinner to fit these larger props, without damaging the looks or function of the spinner. Otherwise, that's ANOTHER 20 bucks to get it right...

And I thought helicopters were bad about nickle-and-diming you to death...

Hi Steve: take heart - once you get everything in place and going it's fairly low maintenance from then on.

Eddie, I don't know if I can make it to Seogoville. That's pretty close to the contest date and far enough away to make it a "contest" trip for me. Chances are I won't make it.
