Cap 232 Plans?
 

Hi All,

First post here, I usually hang around the pattern forums. I am looking for a set of plans for the Midwest Cap 232 (80" span), or a similar size set of plans for the Cap that they are willing to sell or copy. I would buy the Midwest kit, but I have read so many horror stories about how heavy they build that I would rather scratch build than spend $$ on a kit and throw everything away before I start.

Never mind. Turns out Midwest will sell plans separately if you ask nice. Cap 232 plans are $17.50 plus shipping and the Giles G-202 plans are $7.95 plus shipping. Dirt cheap and simple...I like it that way.:D

Dick Hanson has built several Cap 232's based on the dimensions of the Midwest kit. It is typically overbuilt, but with a bit of creativity it works well. Mike McConville designed it and it flies well.

With a lot of creativity it is tremendous.

I have the blue plane shown in that thread. It weighs 12# 4 oz with a ZDZ40 and pitts muffler, which is a few pounds lighter than the Midwest kit with a glow engine.

Thanks, BTerry. That is my thread as well. I have had a running conversation going with Dick about his 232 builds and he has been a tremendous help. I have the Midwest plans now and have them sitting waiting for work to let up so I can go do some constructive stuff.:)

FWIW-- Horizon is about to release their new CAP- at 1289 squares and with removable panels and stabs - the all up weight is supposed to be in the 15lb region - with a proper engine - (a 40 ) done right I bet this can be reduced. I have beat factory weight on almost all my H9 models.
The newbies may screw it up but it looks like the BEST smaller CAP I have seen - prebuilt. Pictures and specs now in Horizon pages. NA for another month. It is donein Peter Goldsmith's scheme
With the Evolution 45 or the ZDZ40RE It should be excellent
I did a ZDZ40 3D thing at 1280 sq in 2002 at 11 lbs - plenty strong so this one should be really strong enough for th less accomplished floggers.
Note the stab has not been lowered - thank goodness.

Dick,

Tower's website still lists you as a contact for a foam wing for the Midwest Cap 232, I don't know whether you are aware it still says that.

mmattockx, if Dick still makes that foam wing, I HIGHLY recommend buying it. Case in point: I had the 72" Hangar 9 Cap 232 with a ZDZ 40. We also had the blue Cap built by Dick. The scratch-built Cap is much larger (78" ws, 1200 in^2 area) but the wing weighed 26 oz less than the builtup wing on the H9 Cap. A wing made of 1# density foam, and covered with 1/32" contest balsa (~6-8# density) is extremely light and durable. The much larger (27% vs 23%) Cap from Dick weighs about 2# less than the smaller H9 Cap, and flies extremely well (no mixing, no coupling).

The new H9 Cap looks great. I am glad they are reviving a Cap in this size range. Dropping it was a huge mistake.

Dick's yellow Petrol Petrel was phenominal, it landed like a sailplane. Lighter is better. Every time I see a picture I kick myself for not buying it when I had the chance...

I don't believe it is available, but I do plan on a balsa/foam wing with 1/16" skin and 1# foam core. I agree, it is vastly better than the built up version. I did a foam wing for the Goldberg Extra 300 and it was something like 8oz lighter than the stock one, using medium balsa and no special effort to build light.
