Andy will provide the "horse's mouth" advice.
From the other end of the anatomy, which is intended to be the master, the 12X or the 5e? That is what is behind Andy's question about how the 12X is configured as it can be master or slave.
I have successfully used a 5e for a slaved/buddy box to a 12X with no problems. I set the 12X to master mode, enabled the channels that I wanted the 5e to have access to, and ran the 12X normally. I plugged the trainer cord into the 12X and then into the 5E, with the 5e turned off (the trainer jack will power up the electronics, but not the RF portion.)
Using the 12X and the 5e this way, there isn't a need to configure servo reversing, etc.
I did notice, however, that the low/high rate switch on the 5e was EFFECTIVE; i.e., the 12X instructor used high rates and the "student" could tame it down by selecting low rates on the 5e.
It is a nice combo.

Yes, what cable are you using? How do you have the 12X configured? Is the DX5e turned off when you insert the cable?

I have 12x as master, all surfaces active and trainer switch on default LTRM. using what I think is the JR cord, but may have been mixed up with my buddies radio shach since its labeled belkin, the 5e never powers up. It makes some noises when pluged in but no lights. The funny thing is even when I hold the trim butten to transfer control it never takes control away from the 12 x.
