Default DMSS to DSM2

Will a 1 year old DMSS or DSMX 9503 radio talk to older dsm2 receivers?

DMSS is totally incompatible with DSM2 and DSMX.

A DSMX radio will talk to any DSM2 or DSMX receiver just fine.

+1 DMSS is a much more robust format than the old DSMX

Guess again.

PS - DSMX isn't "old" - DSM2 is.

John, the only DSMX/DM9 compatibility issue I know of is the Apprentice. Have you checked with Product Support on whatever you have? The DSMX stuff likes about 6' between tx and rx during bind.

Umm.... Horizon isn't real good about answering emails but a phone call will do the trick. If you call and they're busy, they'll offer to call you back and they do. Give 'em a call.....

Happened to me also and I called Horizon. They said sent in the 2.4 module and I got a new one. Did not trust it would work so gave up on trying to use the module to bind to a DSMX receiver. The guys at Horizon were not sure it works but kind of tried to say it should.

So they sent you a new one
Likely did not charge you for it
You suspected it would not work - therefor --what?
Living proof that no good deed goes unpunished.
Try this:
DSMX rx are also DSM2 compatible
Which means--
During a binding sequence - the tx sends out a signal -(in this case a DSM2 signal)
The DXMX rx which was previously set to bind -and powered up- is waiting for a DSMX binding signal
BUT if it only sees a DSM2 binding signal - then it accepts that one
Just that simple

Just got the reply from Horizon

Hello John,

Thank you for contacting Horizon Hobby's Product Support Department.

Unfortunately, this model is not compatible with the DM9 module and we do not currently have a work around. I apologize for the inconvenience.

i thought i'd offer a shameless plug for JRamericas.. They went beyond what they had to do. i crashed my midwest AT-6 with a brand new receiver ... i noticed that the antenna had been pulled loose . so i sent it in for repair . i got a call from them saying that the board was damaged due to the antenna being pulled so they went ahead and replaced the whole receiver for free. that goes a long way with me. Not that simple. I know the compatibility between Dsm2 and DSMX. I have used JR and Spektrum transmitters and have bound DSM2 receivers using DSM2 and DSMX transmitters. I have also bound DSM2 and DSMX receives using DSMX transmitters. But using the DSM2 module on a 10X and and 8103 I could not bind them to a DSMX receiver. Infact a number of receivers both Spektrum and JR. I could bind the DSM2 modulized transmitters to all of my DSM2 receivers. In calling Horizon the person I talked to could not give me a specific answer of yes it should work and went to ask another person about my issue. At best they said they though they think it should work. Having tried everything as distance, away from florescent lights and metal That Module did not work on DSMX receivers but did work on DSM2 receivers. I did not trust it would work. In asking about my issue on various sites I had no one come and tell me they had a DMS2 module that binds to a DSMX receiver. I am still waiting to hear from someone to tell me clearly that they have a module on a on a 10X, 8103 or 9303 72 mghz transmitter that binds to a DSMX receiver so that I can kick myself for selling the module. My 10X and 8103 are retired and my Spektrum 18 G2 serves me well.

I am at a loss-
for explanation - Last year we tested JR347 tx with FRSKY module --and current 4 and 6 channel Spektrum rx
Those tx modules were DSM2
I also used a Spektrum module on the JR347 and as I recall (ouch) it also worked with same rxs.

My 10x, 9303 and 8103 module radios, with the dsm9 DSM2 modules, will bind to DSMX stuff, just not this quad for some reason...

Is this one of the quads that has to be upside down in order to bind?

No need to guess again. Sorry Andy, but DSMX isn't nearly as good as DMSS - and mostly, the range of associated hardware that runs DMSS is of notably better quality. Why not post the specs of DSMX here so we can compare versus DMSS?

I'm sure you know DMSS is able to send much more data per frame than DSMX, at lower overall latency. From what I recall, DSMX is only using a little over 1Mhz of bandwidth for transmission... versus approximately 3Mhz under DMSS. Your processing times between stick movement, to servo movement is a lot higher than what is found with DMSS as well. Also, after how many channels of usage until the resolution drops to 512 from 2048? It doesn't take much to figure out Spektrum is lower-end gear, but is being positioned otherwise.

I just "tossed" a DX18 in favour of the new JR 28x - believe me, the difference is huge. I was convinced the DX18 was an awesome "Pro Class" system, for a great price... turns out it's just great marketing. I will give you one thing, for a roller setup you guys have the best menu system out there. Very intuitive. Past that, these radios are at best an "excellent" choice for your average joe. I see so many threads where you state the Spektrum radio gear is great, even in other brands threads... I think it's a bit telling

You are a copy man's dream come true!
For the peanut gallery folk-- the price of the JR 28 is a bit more than the DX18's $755 w/rx vs what? $2700
lets see 2700/755= 3.5 thereabouts
More features - yes
three and a half times ?
Value is a very subjective thing

Exactly my point RMH. Andy is sitting here telling poor souls that "DSMX" is a direct competitor, if not better than the DMSS based systems. By very extension, DSMX radios are not even on the same level... price, or quality wise. So why is he comparing them and even suggesting to "guess again" in regards to DMSS being better?

If Andy was going around saying "we have a great lineup of radios, at a great price!" I.E - setting proper expectations that these radios meet value requirements first, and not quality requirements as the #1 seller that would be a different story. Spektrum equipment is value-based. Not quality based.

I know a crock of something when I see one.

P.S - if you don't buy the 28x through the rip-off that is general US pricing through Horizon etc. take off close to $1,000 and that's your actual price. I paid $2,000 Canadian which is about $1,500 US. So it's not actually 3x more. You're just being price gouged by Horizon something huge.
