RE: Another Panzl Build Thread!!!
Reviving an old thread to let you know the Panzl is still alive and getting an overhaul. It's gonna be about 2 pounds lighter when done.
I sold the DA-100... have a DA-120 in the works. Here's the weight savings (approx): Motor: 14ozs Losing a rudder servo: 3ozs Losing rudder tray and all self adjusting harware: 3-4 ozs Losing 2 x RXs: 3.1 ozs Losing 2xRegs: 3.4 ozs Replacing wing bolt knobs w/ alum or Ti bolts: approx 5 ozs Adding 922 RX: 1.6 ozs Losing wooden mounts: 1 oz Losing 1 switch: 1oz Replacing stock gear w/ TNT choice cut: unknown This adds up to slightly over 2 lbs, plus the gear savings. Will take my 28.5 lbs plane down to under 26.5 lbs and add a boat load of power. Can't wait! Cheers P.S. - The gear plate mods paid off... it survived a landing with no wheel on one side (the axle failed on T/O)... bent the gear back 45 degrees, zero wood damage. Plane didn't tip over, zero damage to airframe! |

RE: Another Panzl Build Thread!!!
Another couple weight loss items:
Soda bottle fuel tank... 4 ozs lighter than a Dubro tank. Lose the choke servo and links... 2 ozs Add a smartfly ignition kill... .6 ozs Lose the ignition switch... 1oz (mine is a SuperRocker... kinda heavy) Also gonna lose another pin switch and sub in a real light servo extension... can use a bind plug to shut off the R922 RX... another oz. According to my little sheet, I should be down to 26 lbs even with these mods and sacrificing no safety. Pretty excited to see the difference. If I have a hard time balancing with the light motor, do you know how much lighter the newer lightened stabs are? Wondering if these would be worth trying to get ahold of. |
RE: Another Panzl Build Thread!!!
Actuall on the PAnzl they would be the same. If you have it uncovered you can drill some lightening holes in the rudder and elevator surfaces. Add it all up you can probabl save an ounce. Already done that

:D
I ordered my new lumber tonight... Xoar laminated 29x10.... bwah hah hah! Changed my mind on one thing... gonna use FASST instead. Also gonna lose the choke servo and use a SmartFly Kill switch. The lbs are melting off. Gear will lose me 4 ozs. I need new wheels too... mine are loose and distorted from storage. Any suggestions? I don't really like Kavans. Every used the TBM wheels? |
