Hi,

My total weight is 10lbs. 2lbs 1 oz of that is my GMS .76 engine/muffler/spinner alone. That would put the plane at 8lbs with no engine. This is with no smoke, and six HS425 servos, dual elevator servos, ultracote covering, sullivan tailwheel assembly, but otherwise stock build.

Hope to maiden it this weekend...weather permitting.

Have Skybolt with about 15 flights on it. Has Saito 150, 16 oz tank, 4 aileron setup , weighs 9.5 lb. Flies well; unlimited vertical, does outstanding inverted flat spin.

My Skybolt came at 10.5 pounds with a full tank of fuel (14 o.z.), and a full tank of smoke (8 o.z.) Im assuming that it is somewhere around ten pounds. It might sound heavy, but it flys great!!

10 lbs 13ozs. Saito 120, standard servos, ailerons both wings with 2 servos, half of a GI Joe pilot and 10ozs of lead on the firewall. No smoke, but I do have a Slimline smoke muffler for the 120 and plan to trade the lead for the rest of the smoke system. When the time is right.

She's kinda fat, but I love her anyway.

I built the 4 Skybolts pictured below. One for myself and the others for friends. Mine has a Saito 100 twin as does one of the others. The others have a Saito 91 twin (new version) and an OS 120 single that the owner modified to 140. He also fabricated a cowl form fiberglass, which is why it didn't have one in the pic. Mine has been flow about 20 times. Flys great and the twin sounds sweet. The other two with twins have not been flown yet. I don't know if the one with the OS has been flown as I lost track of it after the owner sold it without flying it. Hope you like the pics.

The first ones a bear, kept the patterns and the others were not as bad. Also experience doing the first one really helps. I put the checker board on my wings, but wouldn't do it for anyone else cause of the time consuming aspect of it. My checker board was cut from monocoat and ironed on.

Awsome pictures guys, I'm convinced, my winter project will be the Super Skybolt, hopefully I can afford the Saito 120 twin.

hi guys, i'm fairly new to this hobby, been doing it for just under 3 years now. I just came upon this post, cause i'm looking at getting the skybolt for my next plane. I've only built two kits. But I'm willing to give it a shot. I think I can do it.
My other kits were the gee bee dreamer bipe and GP pete n poke.
Anyway here is my question, I was looking at building this and putting smoke on it. This will be my first one with smoke and i have know idea how to do it. You need a smoke tank, pump, servo, and battery to run the pump. Anything else? I was looking on Tower hobbies and saw a smoke ("everything you need") kit. But there was no pump. Can you do smoke without a pump. Can you give me the run down on it?

one more thing. This will also be my first 4- stroke. I'm planning on putting either a saito 100 or the magnum 120 on it. I've heard alot of good things about the saito, but what about the magnum, anyone have opinions on it. Also on 4-strokes, do you need the pump for them or is it just for 3-d type flying?

Thanks guys

Uh Oh, bit by the Skybolt, you have chosen well, jedi...The Super Skybolt may be the best model airplane you will ever fly, it does fly like a dream...Depending on your piloting abilities, it might even outfly you...

Now, to the questions...If I were to build the SS with smoke, this is what I would do...First, when you get to the fuse were you are bending a shaping, I would make a trap door in the bottom to hold the pump and tank, the way the skybolt is designed the tank sits on a tray wrapped with rubber bands encapsulate in the fuse, the door is the key, if ever there is a problem, this way you can get to it...

Now, the smoke, serious stuff here, you need to do a search here on RCU for smoke, minnflyer has a great explanation on how to educate you on the proper way to wow a crowd...You need to get the oil as hot as you possibly can to create the best smoke, tap the exhaust as close to the head as possible this will put the oil in the flame, next plan on spending some tinker time on it to get the best bang for your buck, I smoked up the whole neighborhood playing with mine.

The tower hobbies kit you saw might call for a pressure tap in the crankcase of the engine, I don't suggest that yet for you since you are new to it... I suggest a electric pump that runs on a separate battery, includes a pinch valve, and is plugged into the receiver for operation...Also is a little simpler and takes up less space...

As for the first four stroke, your gonna love it...The choice is yours between the Magnum and Saito both will work...If you buy new, you will have break in time and will have to lean the low side as it breaks in, the saito 100 has been out long enough you can probably find a good used one out there already broke in...

You don't need a engine with a pump, one w/o will be sufficient...

Hope this will help you decide, Kneesaknocken

Here is a pic of my Senior Telemaster with smoke which made the local newspaper...

Oh, my trick to superior smoke, go to the local harware store and pick up some 1/8" copper tubing, stuff bends great, wrap around your header pipe, cover with household insulation and aluminum tape to create a pre-heater, mine didn't really start to make dense pillowy smoke til then, lot o' luck Kneesaknocken

ko64as, First look at this video of my Skybolt with Smoke:

http://204.96.183.34/Skybolt/Videos/...t_high_res.wmv

Next, read this "How To" on Smoke:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...article_id=455

My feelings are to keep the system as simple as possible, then make it more complicated on an "As Needed" basis. In other words, don't pre-heat until you have tried it without preheating first, I don't pre-heat, nor do I need to (Engine in video is a YS 91AC). But your milage may vary.

Read the Smoke article, and you'll have a better understanding of what you need to experiment with.

thanks everybody, you guys are awesome
I saw your video, absolutely beautiful. I can't wait.
Thanks for the link to the smoke article, but I'll have to wait until tonight to read it. Gotta go to work[:@]

Kneesaknocken, nice telemaster. I like the covering.
As far as the motor, I've been leary on buying used, a buddy of mine bought an engine a while back off of here and the crankcase was cracked.
I just don't want to spend money on an engine that's been in a crash. Cause you know they're not going to tell you.
But really, I do enjoy the breakin process. It helps me learn about it. When I first started, I was self taught and breaking in that tower .46 really helped me learn alot.

which engine would be a good starter 4-stroke, I know you said either but one has to be a better deal for a rookie
the saito 100 is about $279, but the magnum is the same price for a 1.20. I'm kinda leaning toward the magnum but if the saito is a better learner than maybe i should go that way. What do you guys think?

i was looking at the manual for this one and i figured i'd ask. Do the wings come off for transport?
I doesn't look like it. Just curious

I just got done building a tiger two and was going to take it easy for a while, but all of your planes look fantastic! I too have been bitten by the SS bug and will begin building one the winter. Now I have a good answer base for any questions. Again, they all look fantastic!

Yes, the wings do come off for transport, but, a lot of pilots like to keep them intact due to the process...If your impatient and have the transport room leave it together...But, I myself, put mine together each time, this way you can inspect the inner workings before flight...

On the engines they all are good engines, this is a matter of opinion...I don't want to get a riot started...The engines I have owned have mostly been Saito 4S, I have one OS 120 right now and old rebuilt one, it pulls and sounds great...If you stay in the hobby long enough you can just about pick out the engines by there sound...I have always wanted to try a YS but they are a little pricey, maybe one day...

I don't know where you live, but, here in the winter we have swap meets where we trade used planes, engine, and such... I live for a good deal...Other words I'm froogle...Here's a pic of my SS broke down...Kneesaknocken

Who owns a YS 110?
I went to tower hobbies and looked at one, it's supercharged? WOW
here's the link http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXEMJ6&P=0
what are those fittings for on top of the crank in front of the cylinder? fuel pump?
not to bad on price though 329 with a supercharger and maybe a pump, if that is what it is.

kneesaknockin, thanks for the info
I live in Washington state, right now i'm not a member of any club. I'm Air Force, and fly at the army base. I really want to join a club. But I'm never here.
Always gone tdy to (well, you know where), but now i got orders to Germany. So i will be home more often. Should be able to start in a club over there.
Beautiful plane by the way

WYDAH, what a beauty. I love the black on yellow. I was looking at doing mine white on black with a little red.
How did you guys tint the canopy, window tent or spray paint?

Nice job

I have a YS 110 that is going to go in my new Skybol next year.

YS engines - either you love 'em, or you hate 'em

I love 'em

As I said, the video was shot with a YS 91 The YS 110 is the same crankcase, just bored out (Mine even has a machine mark where the "YS 91 AC" was machined off and YS 110 Stamped in its place).

Outside of the YS, if I had to choose between the Saito 100 or Magnum 120, I think I'd go with the 120

Also, not only do the wings come off, but The Skybolt has THE BEST wing attachment system I have ever seen! There are only 2 bolts involved (which hold on the lower wing) everything else slides and locks into place. Personally I can't say enough about how quick and easy the setup is!

Thanks k064as,

I do like how the yellow/black turned out. It's also quite visible at a distance, which helps with orientation. The canopy was tinted using the "Rit Dye Method". Do a search here on RCU and you will find a ton of info. Basically you soak the canopy in a dye mixture until you get the level of tint you want. It doesn't work with all types of plastics, and can be a bit messy, but it worked well for the Skybolt canopy.

Later.

Rit dye is what I use to tint a canopy. Works great if you start with a clean canopy.
