Default The Top Flite P-51 Kit Build

Well lets get started fellas. Looked like there is plenty of interest. I for one believe a build thread is alot more fun with several guys building and sharing tips, problems, etc.
I normally get going pretty fast once I get started but this will not be the case this time. Due to the new knee I had installed almost 3 weeks ago I am just not moving as fast as usual. But dont let me hold anybody back. I will post pics as I advance my build as I hope you all will. Hopefully we can all motivate each other.
The following pics are of me getting started. I cleaned up my shop table and laid out the wing plans. The book calls for building the tail feathers first but I will get back to that later. I am gonna do the wing first. I am also throwing in a pic of my Super Aeromaster that is basically waiting on my to buy an engine. I have somwe money coming in about 2-3 weeks and Thats when that will happen. Also thought I would throw in a pic of my Frankenstien knee. Pretty gross huh?

Should be fun to watch. I built the master some years back and just gave it away a couple months ago. That was a fun build.

I will also keep a watch on this thread. Should be a good one.... Looks like you are recovering from the same thing that I am. I just had my replacement from 2 years ago redone for the 5th time. I feel your pain, trust me. Now as for the Frankenstien look, I may just be able to give you a run for your money.... Dave

I am subscribing also but will try to avoid postings.

I am building a sailplane and asked if I should post a build log.
I had no response so I didnot open a thread.

Looking forward to follow your progress.

Zor

As your know, I'm building Don Smiths. I've build 2 P-51s before the Don Smith, so my knowledge on P-51s is second to none. I want to change my username to "P-51MustangMan".

Just ask if you need help, thats what we are here for.

Hey Mr moderators.....how come I cant find the thread in the forum listings.  My only method of finding it was to go to the link I posted.  I figured once I added a posting this thread would show up back on page 1 and I still cant find it.

The OP edited his original post and removed most of the title (I can only assume it was accidental)

So I renamed the thread, "The Top Flite P-51 Kit Build"

Bhady, ya gotta get that thing out of the box.  We had 8 in of snow last night.  The most at one time since 1993.  We go several years without an 8 in total.  Usual is around 1 inch.  I am hoping to get motivated to get in the shop today.  Send me some positive vibs fellas.  I need to get up offa my butt.

Snowing here again too. I got mine out and took a look over everything I bought to build the kit. I have all but the covering material, I'm undecided what the finish will be yet. I went with Century Jet retracts and power will be with a Saito 125, not the 100 I mentioned above. I guess I was thinking about the Super Aeromaster I'm still working on that will have the Saito 100 mounted. The Aeoromaster will hopefully fly this summer, only a couple of finishing touches left to do.

I am with ya on the Super Aeromaster. I need an engine to completemine. That and cover the top wing and make the cabane struts. Not alot really. But I am about to spend around 30k to open a second location tanning salon. I hafta watch my spending till we get it open this March.
I am going to have to look up the Century Jet retracts. Lately I have read where alot of guys are using them. Why did you go with those over Robart? And are they air operated or electric? So now I have a question for everyone. The W2 rib doesnt seem to fit the spar. I am wondering if I punched out too much material when I removed it from the sheet. Check out the pics. Here is my wing progress. Definatly am starting to feel alot better. I musta spent 2 hours in my shop so far`today.

OK.....I just looked up the Century Jet retracts.  They do look good.
Does anyone know where I can find the videos that show a retract setup that also has operational  inner doors?  I saw it a few months ago and cant seem to find it again.   The vid showed everyting working very scale.

I went with the Century Jet retracts on the recommendation of a friend who has them on a P-47 he is finishing up. They appear to be well made and work very well, however order the optioal adjustable air valve, the standard valve allowed the wheels to extend rather violently. The adjustable valve allows you to control the speed both up and down. The Century Jets also come as a complete kit except for an air pump. Robarts require the purhcase of extras.

All that's left on my Aeromaster is to install the engine, radio and cover the fairings I installed on the gear wires, trim around the canopy, and finish the wheel pants.

I worked on the right wing panel today and the book confused me. The pics show the rib ID numbers facing up with the tabs facing down. On my ribs with the tabs facing down, the ID numbers are upside down.

I just read`that again and I think Ireversed it. hen you look at the pics in the book, with the tabs facing down, the rib numbers are also facing down. Anyway on mine they are the opposite. Its a little confusing.
