Default Looking for sugestions...build #2...

Ok, one build down (TF Contender) and I'm itching to plan out the next one. I'm looking for suggestions. I would like to find a .40 or .60 size sport flyer that I can add retracts and possibly flaps to. I'm not against a good tail dragger, but would like to build it as a trike. The only plane I'm finding that fits the bill and looks reasonably good is the GP Ultra Sport .60. Others look like they would require a great deal of bashing. So what have you got?

You won't find a much better flying plane that the Ultra Sport. There is a bit of carving to do in the kit, but it's not bad. and the end result makes the extra work well worth the little bit of extra work. I'm a bit odd in the Ultra Sport Brotherhood as I actually prefer the looks of one with trike gear. The only problem with doing it with trike gear is that you can't do retracts as there isn't enough room in the nose for the nose gear retract. So if you want to do retracts you'll need to make it a taildragger. So it's really 6 of one and a half dozen of another.

Hope this helps

Ken

Ken,

Look at posts 68 through 72 in the link below. I no longer think it is impossible to have trike retracts on the US. Mike's example from these posts in the link below use an upright engine, but I do not believe it impossible with a side mounted engine.

Think through the firewall, not against it... I am currently doing this in my Super Kaos build. It works!

For your consideration. Opinions?

I've always wanted to build a Super Sportster .60 with retracts too.

Well, after the contender I look forward to just "a little" carving. Bipe, thanks for that link. I'm thinking some of these new electric retracts might be just the ticket. At any rate it should keep me busy scratching my head for a while at least. It's starting to look like I went straight to what I was looking for with the Ultra sport.

A few more good ones, Sig King Kobra and Great Planes Mustang 40. Both are great flying and can be built with retracts although mine our both fixed gear.

I love them, but retracts are a pain.

A retractable NOSE wheel is a triple pain.

The Ultra Sport is one of the best planes ever - Period. But you'll be doing yourself a favor by making it a tail dragger with retracts.

Two excellent mods are to move the main gear out one rib bay and add flaps. Other than that, don't change a thing!

GP patriot would fit your specs. If you can find one. I found a .40 kit new in box on the marketplace here. Some day I may actually build it!

Hi!
Agree with Minnflyer!
If you want to fly with retracts ...get a larger plane! Much easier!

They are great. I wouldn't use anything else unless there just wasn't a set that worked for a particular plane. I've had good luck with the Lado's (now E-Retract or something like that) but I would like to try the E-Flite gear one of these days.

So, I ended up with the Ultra Sport .60. It is on the build board now. Going to do the common suggested changes of, Tail dragger w/ retracts moved out one wing bay, and flaps. Decided against the electric retracts simply because I have a retract servo laying around  and that really cuts the cost. (what can I say, I'm cheap [X(])

After you fall in love with the US you may want to take a little trip over to the Blue Jay Web page and look at what they have to offer. The Bridi designs are great but the builds are a bit harder in the sense that they don't come with the photos in the instructions or take you by the hand and completely walk you through each step of the build. Very old school but the planes are well worth all the thinking required. This year I had finished the Dirty Birdy and they now show you on the plans the locations for retracts, fixed gear or trike. I found the Birdy one of the better flying 60 size pattern planes and it looks really cool.

You are doomed!

Once you fly an Ultra Sport, everything else will just be everything else.

So sayeth the biggest supporters of the Ultra Sport.....with all the lovers of this plane I've come accross seems I can't go wrong! I have a Evo .61 nx that was flying a H9 spitfire. That was My engine of chioce as it's laying around. Will the extra weight of the gear / flap mods be too much for this engine? Should I find the cash for a larger engine? (That would really slow the build down!)

Everybody these days is shoving a huge engine in a US, but I think you will be fine. Every US I've every owned at an OS 61 FX in them and they had more than enough power. Build it with the Evolution and you should be fine. And even if you're not, you can also upgrade to a larger engine later!!!

You know, that's what I figured.....but it's nice to hear it from "a ultra sport expert".

I have this in the build stash and will use for the same purpose as suggested. Perfect for retracts/tail dragger. Don't get me wrong, the US must be the top dog, but I have always like the design of this one too!

Yes Duco (and JP-B)- I figured that this would be a great 'retracts training' plane. I've never built an US but have piloted one. They fly very nice and neutral. The wing section is 'fat' enough so that downward vertical manouvers are manageable without getting excessive speed if engine propped correctly. Bigger engines aren't always better as previous posts mention. So with the US go with what instructions call.

That's what I'm doing. Got started saturday and made it through the tail and into the first wing panel, then it sat all day sunday. Turns out mothers day is not the best day to sit in the garage and build planes. (actually my wife did tell me it was OK if I wanted to, but I thought it was a trick) Going to try and put an hour or so a night in and see where I get. I'm working second shift here, and have spent the last 8 hours working on planes, so It's not always my first priority to run home and work on a plane! [X(]

Too funny Gray Beard! I like the 'pins and needles' effect of underpower, lol. Of course, I'm a masochist!
