RE: gluing aluminum to primed fiberglass
Is this a structural or cosmetic bond? If it just something like gluing aluminum foil fake panels on, gluing to the primer will probably work fine. If it has to take any load, maybe not...

I have to agree, if you're talking a structural bond, strip the primer. What you have to remember is that the glue will only hold as much stress as what it's attached to. If the primer bond is weaker than the glue, the primer will let go and the bond will fail. If it was me in that situation, I'd strip the primer and scuff sand the glass to get a better bond

Can I use super77 to bond thin aluminum to fiberglass ? Should I take the primer back down to bare glass ? Thanks

Fiberglass and aluminum will vibrate in different ways, no glue bond will really work. You want to mechanically tie the parts together, rivets, bolts come to mind, but you can use fiberglass to do it too. If you wanted to bond a aluminum rod to the inside of a fuse you could drill a hole across the rod so that glass and resin would get in the hole. Now if the resin bond fails you have the mechanical bonding still holding the rod to the fuse.

3M 77 spray adhesive is a temporary spray adhesive only, I don't know what your application is, but if you do decide to go with a spray, brush, or roll on adhesive, you might consider 3M 30NF, it is much better suited for for permanent bond lines.

Do a test with lacquer based contact cement. Methinks it would work well for light structural (your call!) and cosmetic work. That stuff really sticks to itself! I have used it to stick 1/64 ply skins to balsa and ply open structure. You can't get the pieces apart without breaking something.

I glue lithoplate to whatever with contact cement. Use a roller to get full contact where you can. Just make sure you scratch it up on the backside and clean well with lacquer thinner and wait for the contact cement to dry " weldwood" when they touch together they arn't comin apart. Just put 4 louvers on each side of my Concept Fleet, came out great. Lanny Khelsea

I have found the best adhesive for securing aliminum sheeting to composite is Ganopy Glue. The worst part is it takes a while to try but it works great. I just completed a 100 inch wingspan plane completely covered with aluminum roof flashing from home depot. I was amazed how well the canopy glue worked after testing many different adhesives.
