Isopropol alcohol on a rag and wipe with the grainturning the rag frequently. I don't think all of it will be gone but most will.

I ALMOST epoxy'd my fin on wrong last night! Fortunately, when I re-read the directions I caught the one liner about making sure the fin is flush with the stab. Could've been really bad. How do you clean epoxy off the wood if you need to?

You must have a steady hand on the Dremel and stabilize your holding hand against some solid object.
Protect your eyes with gogles and use a breathing filter to avoid inhaling the dust.
Sometime we can cut the wood just under the epoxy.
Epoxy does not penetrate far into the wood

Glad you have it sorted out Deryk, nothing like having one of those OH SH%T [X(] moments when you have epoxy smeared all over everything. Been there before and probably will be again in the future.
Zor, next time take a picture when you have all that protection on, it must look like your getting ready to go deep sea diving.

Explanation for unacquainted readers.
A sanding drum about 1/2" dia on a Dremel high speed rotary tool at 5,000 up to 30,000 rpm produces very fine dust particles in this case of cured epoxy. You would not want that in your eyes or in your lungs.
So yes ___ I get ready for deep sea diving before using that method __ __...

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Yeah, it was a bit terrifying/relieving that I actually caught it in time. Sorted out, cleaned up and now I'm gluing it on right this time.
Got it vertical and plumb (with a plumb-bob, thought that was a good idea). checked it out with the front of the model and letting it cure!
On to the top stringers. I'm doing the razor back and in order to do that, the stringers have to twist quite a bit to get them in line with the rest of the body. Is that normal, I'm assuming?

First coat of primer sprayed on and wet sanded back. I'm pleased with the way it came out. I only have one bubble in the glass around the stab/fin fillet. A little 3M spot glaze will take care of that. On to the 2nd,3rd,4th,5th,@th,%th,*th coats of primer............ [&o]
I have tried tests of the sanding sealer method (Deft) and was not happy with the results either. Sometimes there just isn't any shortcuts that will satisfy and replace resin and good old fashioned elbow grease. If there is I haven't found it yet.

Redbiscuits.... And for anyone else interested......
I know I'm a little late to this thread but I have heard of guys using hairspray on the bare wood before beginning the glassing process. The hairspray is light weight and seals the wood to prevent the resin soaking into the wood thus adding weight. I have not tried this method yet but hope to give it a shot.
Btw. ...currently have a TF B-25 that I converted to electric. One flight on it so far and hope to get another one in the next few days pending weather.

Thanks for the input Neil, I'll have to remember that in the future.
Started laying out the panel lines. One thing is, I ordered was described as Chart-Pak tape from Wow Planes. What I got from them is 1/64th rubber tape that doesn't have the white marks on it like traditional Chart-Pak. I'm a little disappointed in the order as a whole because it also took a week and a half to get here. They are in Florida for cryin out loud!

I'm using HVAC aluminum duct tape for the raised inspection panels and hatches. I have to make sure to get it where I want it the first time as it is real sticky and might lift the primer off if I try to reposition it. I'm not going to go overboard with it, just a few here and there and eyeball close to scale.

Wow! That must've been quite a thrill!! No more models, huh? (just kidding...) You've gotten to the real thing! Really cool.
I'm almost done skinning the top of my fuse and I'll upload some pics soon enough, but it's been a crazy week. Entering my busy time of year. Not really going to have a lot of time over the next month, but we'll see. My tail landing gear came in and I can't wait to go pick it up. Geez this is fun! (and expensive!!!)

Congrats on your first student flight! Next thing you know you'll be up there by yourself.
I notice that there are dots along some of your panel lines. I'm taking them as rivet placement? Perfect spacing.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I have the Top Flite Giant Scale Corsair kit, retracts & fiberglass cowl that I was going to build as my next plane. I picked up a new Brison 3.2 (52.32cc) engine at a swap meet for a good price and intended to use it in this plane. The Brison is 4.4lbs with muffler & electronics. The data sheet that came with the engine says the thrust is 26lbs and can use the following props 20x10, 20x12 or 22x8. It doesn’t look like the Brison engine will be a good fit for the Corsair but it looks like it could work in the P-47. Do you think this is a good engine for the GS P-47? I'm concerned about having to add a lot of weigh to the nose to get the plane to balance on the proper CG location. Do you think you will have to add weigh with your DLE 55?

Thanks guys, it was a lot of fun. We'll see were it goes. We're not rich by no means, so if I do it a little here and there maybe someday I can get my license. I could do ground school by studying on my own and buying a few manuals and checklists. Then I could do the flights with the instructor. He said I could be solo-ing in as little as 10 to 15 flights. [X(]
EJ, the dotted lines on the tape is some of the older CP tape that I had left over from my small P47. I really like the lines because it helps get the panels lined up from side-to-side. The new tape that I bought from WOW Planes didn't have the lines on it which made me have to break a ruler out to get the panels matched up on both sides of the fuse. Kind of a pain doing it that way. With the tape that has the lines, I can just count the lines and get really close on the oposite side. Does that make sence?
I'm hoping that I won't have to add a bunch of weight, although I expect to have to add a little to the nose. I think the Brison would make a good engine for the P-47. What is the difference in weight between the Brison and say a G-62? Pretty close I would imagine.

I had my first flight as a student today, We went up in a 172 and I think I'm hooked! The family loved it, so that's a plus.

It's not all it's cracked up to be honestly. Pay is great. Time away from home stinks.
Closely following your P-47 Build......

I can understand how cruising around in that POS could get old
Great to have you following along Neil. Did you get the B-25 up over the weekend?

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Don’t know if you have seen this video but this guy is flying a TF GS P-47 with the DLE55. It looks like that engine has no problem flying that plane.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpHvN...e_gdata_player
The Brison is 3.25lbs, DLE55 is 3.3lbs and the G-62 is 4.5lbs. The P-47 builds lighter than the Corsair, 20 to 22 lbs for the P-47 and 24 to 26 lbs for the Corsair.

Panel lines all laid out on the fuse and ready for primer.

I thought the grey paint was the primer and you had laid out the panel lines over the primer.
You now say "ready for primer" .
Are you going to apply primer again and hide all the panel lines ?
?????? . . . .

Hey Gary, I see that tiny model you have in the lower left of the first picture (just the wing). Is that what you used to get the panel lines? Where did you get it, anyway? That'd be a great thing to have for perspective...
