RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Nice work on your DR-1 Anthony!!!
I have a 70" Scratch-a-plane DR-1, I've had it since '90. It flies real nice. I had a quadra 35 on it. I sold it last spring, and have missed it since. The guy I sold it to rekited it, (pancaked it hard on the landing gear)and gave it back to me.The damageiseasier to fix, thenwhat it lookslike.I have repaired the wings, and landing gear, and I am working on the fuse. I have to do the "Hunny-Do" list at the same time! so it will take me a little longer to get finished LOL (can't get away with puttingthe listoff any longer) I have a G-38 Imight put on it, as I sold the Quadra 35 that was on it!
capnduane,
I like your choice for your scheme.I have had that same one since the '90's on mine! I am rebuilding mine right now, but it'll have the same scheme one back on it again.

On mine the rear of the landing gear mounts on the lower wing. The hit drove the gear mount throught the wing! I have fixed it. Last night I replaced the gear mount, It's not in, inthe picture when I took it.
This is picture before and after of the lower wing. One picture everything is just sitting there, with no glue, the other with the pins, most is glued. Not thefront parts were yet.

Pat, been there, done that, many times! When I stack one up or someone gives me a wreck, I stick the remains in a plastic bag, out in the garage and forget about it for a while. Then one day I go out and open up the bag, and Voila! a kit! a challange! Your triplane will fly again, no doubt. A whole lot less work than building from scratch.... It was a beauty, must have been a shock to see it in parts. Your DR1 is the third one I have seen in this livery, I love the blue and the white raven. Looks so good in the air. I did my undersurfaces in a grey/blue, most people use a turquoise color. Mine is not a true to scale rendition, its kind of a mix of two different 3views that I found. The black striped wheels are off one of my D-8s, like the way they go round on those low flybys! Great fun. Like David says, I am in the process of weathering the look of the model now. Anthony, good luck with your maiden, I was real nervous when I flew mine for the first time, when one spends alot of time building a beautiful bird, its hard not to be aprehensive! Not to worry though, it will fly great, no doubt. Duane

All ready to put the maiden on the DRI and the weather will not co-operate. We are having 20mph wind gust[:@].
I ran the DLE-30 and it pulls good. The 20x8 prop is keeping the RPM's on the low side put it has really good pulling power. I ran 2 tanks of gas thru the engine today. The idle is a little rough but I expect this to get better as I run some more gas thru it. I have to work late all week and I am going to Toledo next Saturday so next Sunday will be the day weather permitting.

Well since it was too windy to fly I decided to run some mroe gas thru the DLE-30. Something went wrong while running the 3rd tank of gas thru it and the engine is running like crap. It started sputtering like it was missing. I pulled the plug and it looked like it was running rich and fouling the plug. I put a new plug in and turned the high speed needle in by 1/8 of a turn and it is still running bad. Any ideas?

Hi Robert,
I went back and moved the low needle in 1/8 tuen and no change.
I am going to pick up a NGK-6 spark plug tomorrow. I am also going to top off the ignition battery to eliminate a weak battery. It was fresh charged before running the engine but 30 minutes of run time should not have run the battery down. I may try a 6v battery on the ignition over the 4.8v that I have on the DRI.
All else fails I will remove the carb and check for dirt. I was very careful when I assembled the tank to keep everyting clean but you never know. I need to make sure the engine is reliable before sttempting the maiden.

Some may offer a different opinion, but this is what I have done for thirty year's with gas engine's. First you need a tach, or really good ears. I would also recommend to check the timing. How to tune, Start the engine and warm it up. At least 200-250. Throttle up to full throttle, lean the top end to peak RPM and back off 50-100rpm. Bring the throttle down till it's in the part where it gurgle's. Lean the bottom needle just untill the gurgle is almost gone. That's it on tuning. If this is a brand new engine, NIB, and your running regular two cycle oil @ 32-1. Somewhere between 16-32oz of fuel it would loosen up. Causing the low needle to go rich, as well as the top just not as dramatic. You can replace the plug if you wish but it should be fine and typically last the life of the engine.
I agree on the run time of the battery depending on the mah. I don't agreeon the 6 Volt. A fully charged 6v puts out 7.2 which is not recommended. I also would drop the prop size just a little.

If you want to listen to a newby, here's my 2 cents after reading the DL-20 thread. Toss the stock plug on go with the NGK! I've already done that with my DL-20 but have never run it yet.
Take care,
David

I have five quarts of 32:1 through my DLE 30. I had my first dead stick Friday. The engine seemed to be missing while in flight. It ended up being the DLE stock Plug. I put a new NGK in and so far no problems.

Durn wind, we have been having gusty wind conditions here alot lately. I have over 20 flights on my DR1 as of now, and am detailing the cockpit with a full body pilot, compass, ignition switch, etc. It sure does not like cross winds for landing, take off is not so bad, it will weathervane into the wind despite lots of rudder deflection. The good thing is its flying in just short run and will lift off nicely into the wind. Have you checked the diaphram and flapper valves for stiffness? Can cause lots of problems if they are not supple.

Tahnks for the help Robert,
I stopped to buy a new NGK plug on the way home and the auto parts store was out. I used the stock plug and set the gap at .024
I printed out a timing templat from C&H and laminated it at work today and checked the timing when I got home. It was 40deg BTDC[&o] I had to stretch the holes in the sensor strap and was able to ge it to 29deg. The motor now runs very well. I will run a couple more tanks of fuel thru it this week and hopefully put the maiden on this Sunday weather permitting.
I do not have any troubles out of my YDA-56 on my 33% Cub but I am going to check the timing on it and see where it is set. So much for thinking the timing was pre-set from the factory.

Glad to hear Anthony. On the subject of plug's. When you say stock if you mean the one that came with it, don't fly with it. Those are junk. Have taken many apart and the internal's are so degraded almost a powder, it's a wonder they even work a little. Get an NGK before flight. If I can find the photo of the inerd's I'll post it.
By the way, I seen you over in the gas forum's. That's a whole other world in there.

Hi Robert,
I do plan on getting one before flight. I will check a few local auto parts stores this week. I am also making a list of goodies to pick up at Toledo on Saturday. A charge TX charge wire for my Aurora 9c for my DC charger, a tachometer and wholesale list of goodies for my current build.

I picked up a NKG CM6 plug for the DLE-30 and it is running great. I am heading to Toledo in the morning for the model expo. They are calling for the weather on Sunday to be 77deg with 15-25mph winds[:@] I just can't catch a break. I may just have to take a day off of work when the weather is right to get the maiden in. I am going to be attending a Fly-In with the DRI on May 6th and I need to get the bugs worked out before then. I will post a flight report when it finally happens.

The trip to Toledo yesterday went well,
I paid a visit to the BUSA booth and looked at their new 1/3 DRI and Albi DV. The DRI will be available in 6-8 weeks and the Albi this winter.
They are calling for 25mph winds here today and we had rain all day yesterday so the Sod farm is too wet for flying anyhow[:@] I have decided to take a 1/2 day off of work Wed. to maiden the DRI. I have alot of vacation time to burn up anyhow. The weather is supposed to be in the upper 60's with 10-15mph winds.
What is the max winds that you guys fly your DRI's in?
Here are a few pics of the new 1/3 DRI from BUSA.

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Good morning Anthony!
I fly for fun and relaxation so I try and hold out for 15 mph or less, the lesser the better and where I fly (MVRCC in Lebanon) anything
more than a quartering cross wind is out, but thats just me. I really liked they way my Dr.-1 flew, until I cracked it up at Hoosier DP
last year, my fault, not the plane. I have a replacement, and am still trying to decide where to start on the old one.
I was at the show on Friday and was not in the hall more than a minute before I was at the BUSA booth. Just had to see the big triplane.
No more Burger King fridays, no more camels cigs, no more chips out of the snack machine, I got to have that big Dr-1.
Your triplane looks great, can't wait to see it, and your D-VII fly.
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the tips, I have the luxury of flying at the Sod farm and I always have a head wind. I will keep my plans for the maiden on Wed. I am going to work on running the engine some more today on my DRI and Cub to make sure everything is good to go.
Where is your flying field in Lebanon? is it the one by the Apple Orchard? I do plan on being at the Fly-in at the GRCC on the 6th so maybe I will see you there.

Hi Anthony,
I've got the Del Johnson thing at GCRCC on my calender in big red letters. Wouldn't miss it for the world.
MVRCC flies on a field due West from Lebanon. We are across the road from Armco Park between St. Rt. 63
and Greentree Rd. on St Rt. 741. About a mile due East from Warren County Airport. Club has been there since
1975. Web page is www.mvrcc.org
The club that flies at the apple orchard is the Apple Corps at Iron's Fruit Farm. They are about 5 miles from my
house. Been there a couple of time but just to visit.
Good luck with the maiden, I'm sure it will go fine.

Mike,
I searched the web site for your club and I could not find anything about the length of your paved and grass strips. The paved looks about 250 ft?

Thought I would post some engine performance numbers. I replaced the loug with a NGK CM-6.
Prop: Xoar 20x8 Axial
32:1 Oil Mix
RPM: 1800 idle/ 6400 Full throttle
Thrust at Full Throttle: 16lbs. This was measued with the plane sitting on it's main wheels and pulling a fishing scale.
I think I would have been better off with a 20x6 prop but I don't think the 20x8 will be an issue. It should unload a bit in the air and I will be doing most of the flying at less than 1/2 throttle.
