RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Anthony you are really moving on this Tripe. Looks very good. At this rate you better order some covering
One week to frame a DR1 has to be a Record. I recently told someone that I thought I could build a DR1 from start to finish in 3 months. I think you could do it in 3 weeks.

Thanks Guys,
I think I will have the plane all framed up by New Years but then it will really start to slow down. Fabric and paint will be time consuming as well as adding the details. My guess is it will be ready for maiden sometime in Feb and I will sit and admire it until warm weather. My Waco's need new flying wires made before next flying season so I will move on to that after the Tripe.
If all goes well I will build a GTM Fokker next year.
Later!!

Anthony, Just wanted to say thanks for a great build thread. I'm subscribed and have followed the thread from day one. I never have built a DR and I might not get the chance with 2 grandsons keeping me busy, but I get to enjoy your build. Oh, btw grandkids do love the sim!
Best wishes!

Just a thought about your changes to the tail area. I also dropped the tail area on my DVII to help with the amount of trim needed to fly level. But I forgot to change the overall length of the rudder to match. Now my rudder sticks out below by the same amount I changed the fuse. Just something to think about. I am glad I made the change, it really helped.

I am glad you are enjoying the thread.
I had to work a few hours this morning. Going to try and finish framing the fuse today.

I was going to leave the rudder post at the same level. I only dropped the trailing edge of the stab by 1/8". That will keep the bottom of the rudder inline with the bottom of the fuse.

Jeffee,
Your DVII looks great, I like the color scheme.
I have the turtledeck formers and stringer in place and the sheeting joined ready to sand, trim and install. I have to make my mind up on the cockpit before I add the cockpit sheeting. I am leaning towards just adding a cockpit floor and a pilot bust. As I am planning on building a GTM Fokker down the road I think I will save those details for that one.
Any thoughts?

Thats what I was thinking.
This will be a good plane to try out a few things on before the GTM kit like the camo striping. I may even forgo the rib stitching on this one. Just paint it up to look nice and fly the thing.
I have the cockpit floor sheeting made and I am ready to go glue it down. It looks like the cockpit ply sheeting is going to be a real joy to get it trimmed properly for a good fit.
Gonna take a break and watch some football before I tackle the cockpit sheeting.

I know I'm a little crazy but that's just me I like multi wings , not 3D ,here's a pic of my new proj , her is a pic she is 9 wks old in pics now 5 mounths lots of fun , by the way she was born with only one eye

She is a cutie
I have an Alaskan Malamute pup, he is 6-1/2 months old today and tips the scales at 72lbs. I expect him to hit 130 when he is full grown.
Don't worry about the one eye, I have an English Setter that has one eye and a cat that was blind at birth. She is the smartest cat in the house by far as she has to use her head. She knows where everything is but she does get pissed when you move the furniture.
Here is a pic of my boy Takoda.

I finished up the sheeting around the cockpit and the sheeting aft of the middle wing.
The cockpit floor is made from 1/8" balsa and I painted it black as well as the bottom side of the cockpit sheeting before glueing it down. For the wing hold down bolt holes I lined them with plastic tubing. This was set in place then wicked thin CA around the tubing and the sheeting and hit with with accelerator to keep it from running to the bottom.
The middle wing has been glued into position on the wing hold down plate. I am going to try and finish the sheeting on the front end tonight.
Here are a few pics of the progress.

Ok, I gotta show of my little girl, this is Miss Abby. She was 6 months old when we rescued her form the shelter, she's now 2 and 75lbs.
I've never really cared that much for dogs, but must confess she's found my soft spot. She's a sweetheart. She's half Sheperd and half Lab.
As you can see she loves to chase little electric planes. Lee's (aka WinterHawke) Easrtborne is one of her favorites.

She is a fine looking dog Del, god help that plane if she ever catches it
Rescues can make the best pets. I have 5 dogs and 4 of them were rescues. Takoda is the only one that came from a breeder. We also do cat rescue. My wife has hand rasied numerous litters of kittens and we adopt out as many as possible. You still can't swing a stick around here without hitting a cat.

She's only interested in them when they're moving, as soon as they land she goes looking for something else.
She's good company now that I'm retired, we take turnes aggervating each other...........

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Hey Anthony,
Now that you're getting close to starting the tail feathers, thought I'd throw out another option for you that worked good for me.
In the BUSA plans you glue together balsa parts for the outline and have a flat airfoil. Try a alternate 1/16 balsa, 1/32 ply laminate
outline (about five layers) like the 1/3 GTM Dr. 1 is done. This in my opinion gives you a lighter and stronger structure. You can
also add the more scale airfoil. Lighter in the tail, less balance needed in the nose.
For the TE of the stab and LE of the elev you can use either dowels or carbon fiber tube.
I'm in the process of doing a 1/4 Fokker V29 which is an experimental plane using an extended DVIII wing with a DVII fuselage
and I'll be scratching a DVII fuse from BUSA plans and will be laminating the tail on it.
If that does'nt work for you, you can always go back to the BUSA way.

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Thanks for the tip Del I will take a look at it, I have a ton of wood on hand.
I have the sheeting on the fuse top complete. The middle wing is epoxied into position and I added a over the L/E and bonded it to the former to also help secure the wing. I saw this in the other BUSA DR1 thread. The sheeting job was easier than I anticipated but still wasn't a walk in the park. Also as someone mentioned I did run short of sheeting and I had to dig into my stock.
The next step is to mount the bottom wing and I need a break from the build before I get into that so I will save that for tomorrow after work.
Here are a few pics.

Looking good. I would recommend adding a removable hatch on the bottom, just behind the firewall. It makes it so much easier having access from the bottom as well as the top. Especially with a rear carb engine. Glad I built mine that way.

Congratulations Anthony on what seems to be another first class aeroplane. Your attention to detail is truely magnificent. How many planes do you have in your hanger these days, and what method do you use to store them?

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Hi Vincent,
Well lets see a 25% Waco, 33% Waco, 33% J-3 Cub, Jack Stafford Ercoupe and a foamie Corsair. Plus couple partial builds.
Storage is another issue. I have planes taking up 1/2 of my Home Theatre. The 1/3 scale planes take up alot of space. I am looking at building a storage building outside just for my models next summer. This would make the wife a bit happier as she is now telling me I cannot build anymore planes after this one until I find a better way of storing them. Also getting 1/3 scale planes up and down out of the basement is no treat either. I am lucky not to have damaged any planes yet.
I love to build and I have built a few for friends but I really hate letting go of them after all the work. I think I could build 2 big models a year if I can figure out how to store them.
One of the things I like about the DR1 even at 1/4 scale it is a relatively small plane. I can bring it up from the basement and transport it without removing the wings. My 33% Waco I have to take off the stab and landing gear to get it in and out.
I had an extremely long day at work, not sure if I will work in the hobby room tonight or not. I am on a very tight project deadline at work that is a make or break for a new product line at work. If my idea and development works out we win the job, if not well we lose the job and I am probably the fall guy.

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Well I gave myself a kick in the butt and went down and fitted the bottom wing to the fuse. I always try to make sure I at least do something on a build each day.
I had to adjust one side of the wing saddle slightly by sanding to get the distance from the middle wing to the bottom wing correct at each tip. The wing was off by just over 1/8" tip/tip from the L/E down to the table with the middle wing even. I added a piece of 1/32 ply between the wing and the wing mounting plate and it shifted it too far. I sanded half of the thickness of the 1/32 ply away and splipped it back into position and the wing checks dead even now. I glued the shim in place with thin CA.
Here is a pic of the plane sitting on it's nose, the 2nd pic you can see the thin shim on the right side of the wing mounting plate. I will drill the holes for the wing mounting bolts tomorrow and move on to building the cabane soldering jig and installing the cabanes.
