My feeling is that if you intend to fly with ailerons, later on, build them into this project. My Kadet Seniors all have ailerons. I wouldn't want them any other way.

I agree aggressively, completely, emphatically and keep the rudder on the left stick so your brain remembers it is the rudder later on.

I totally, heartily and unbendingly disagree with Tony. On a 3 channel plane with dihedral the rudder mainly controls roll, not yaw. The only exception is in a stall turn.

Right stick for roll, left for yaw. And this is not theory with me. I flew 3 channel planes for about 15 years before I got my first aileron plane. And when I did finally fly my aileron plane, I flew it with no assistance and no difficulty, and then quickly learned to use rudder for what it is for...yaw.

I repeat, this is the voice of experience here, I am not theorizing.

When I started flying, I had a 3-channel foam ARF with an Enya .15 on it, and had it set up with rudder on the left stick. I learned how to use rudder and elevator in making turns, but I also learned how to use throttle and rudder together on the same stick for keeping the plane straight during takeoff and landings to give right rudder inputs as I needed, and this setup always worked best for me. In any case, I'm going to modify the Kadet Sr. kit to add ailerons, as it's pretty easy to do, and there's no sense in my building a plane for a specific engine and not do it the way which will give me the most enjoyment.

The Kadet Senior can become a decent sport aerobat, when ailerons are added and some dihedral removed. I'm sure that you will be pleased with your decision.

For ground handling, when I was still flying 3 channel and knew I was going to get 4 channel I set up my computer radio so that both sticks worked the rudder. That way I could fly with the right stick and taxi with the left stick. That made the transition to ailerons a complete non-event.

The reason I like 3 channel as an instructor is that many students seem to do fine until they have to stop a turn. They will bring the plane around, giving the right amount of elevator, but aileron plane wants to keep turning. You have to give it a little opposite aileron to stop the turn. For those of us who are experienced, we hardly notice we are doing it. But this is where beginners often have trouble, because they will over control trying to stop the turn. I think that's why my student was so happy when I flew a 3 channel trainer with him. Suddenly the turns were much easier. Later he learned ailerons just fine, but the 3 channel control helped him get through the rough beginning stages. Seeing that made me appreciate the old school approach.

Build it either way, you will enjoy it.

As for instructing, the 3 channel is easier on the instructor for the first few flights, it's harder for the student to quickly roll the plane upside down, but today most have flown on a simulator some so I don't think it matters anymore.

I building my Sr. as a 3 channel, if I ever get back to building it, I just like flying 3 channel. I have the rudder on the aileron stick, but do mix rudder into the ailerons so I steer with the rudder stick on the ground.

I learned to fly on a 3 channel Pacific Ace powered by an OS .20 4 stroke. Very little chance of getting upside down. The hardest part for me was mastering final approach speed and angle. Once I got it, it was easy.

I later on used the wing for a slope glider. after trashing out the fuse. It was a real hoot.

I have a fistfull of ribs for a future project.
I have to keep an eye on the dog or my mother when I turn the dog loose in the front yard. My mother means no harm but is getting rather senile.
So while had Bella running loose in the front I whipped out some ribs. I already had the templates made.
The final intent is a new wing for my SR. Low wing, LG mounted to the wings, plug in wing panels. Stretched out to 90". Slotted flaps and barn door ailerons.
Ran out of wood so I still need another 6 sheets to make all of the ribs.
Doing projects outside is a good way to give Bella some free time while I make sure a gate is not opened while she is free. Last project I got about 5 or 6 sections of fence replaced for my mother. 1 post a day was all I could physically manage. I can only be on my feet about 10 to 15 minutes at a time till the pain gets too bad. So setting in a chair sanding a stack of ribs is right up my ally.

Those are big flaps, and relatively small ailerons, but it flies nice.

How about coupling the flaps with the ailerons making "flaperons"?

In my Kadet the surface is too big to be coupled as flaperons, if you see some approaches are done with full elevator up. Maybe they could be coupled like in the gliders butterfly

About the ratio flap/aileron I have seen in the full size superstol it is 2/3 vs 1/3 of the wing span. In the vid there is a 360 turn with engine off so ailerons are still effective though small

Well my Lt-40 finally made it into the air this past Wed. for it's maiden with a second flight to prove it was no accident.. It was not an ideal day for a maiden , we had a gusty east wind at the field which is a bad thing.. puts the wind at our back with some strange air currents from the surrounding areas.. But she managed the cross wind very well .. The gusty winds at higher altitudes knock her around some and even tried to flip her over when turning into the wind.. I had a hard time to get her to land.. had to force her down,, as soon as she got near the ground she just would not slow down and settle.. just wanted to keep flying.. But all said and done.. she came through it like an LT and came home in one piece ..

Thats an LT-40 for you! LOL Congrats on a good maiden. Mine lands hot, much easier to land that way than to try to float it in. Then again, its not a trainer either as it will not self correct, flat wings tend to eliminate that feature. I also have the throws set to maximum, so it snaps through a loop if you want it to, or if you are really light on the sticks can be very graceful. Love the LT-40, flies great in any weather. Once you get good with it, move the controls to the max and give it a whirl.

Congrats on your successful maiden.

I built an LT-40, but sold it before I got a chance to fly it. I've been thinking about building another, but the Seniorita Sport has my attention, too.

What size FS will that take? I have some 91FS laying around that need a home, including a Saito I was given.
