I think they are the ones that gave you big blocks of wood you had to carve down and shape for many parts of the planes. They were in fact actually more basic and more old school in the ideas of how to build. If you got a cowl it would be halves or thirds of vacuum formed plastic, not a nice fiber glass one. Also you typically would have much more stick and multiple piece laminations instead of one big sheet ready to go.

I wasn't in the hobby at the time.. but seems like at some point during the 70's? The techniques of buildings changed a bit...

I know when I was new to the hobby I would see people in magazines and at flyins that just seemed to magically produce impossibly nice planes. Other people could spend a year on a basic stick and wing it would look crashed when new. But you knew their heart was in it !
My belief is that Sig uses the Craftsman term because you need to be a craftsman to build one. There are few interlocking parts. Some parts need to be cut by the builder. It takes some experience to build a Craftsman kit, where the jig-lock kits are a little less complicated.

Tom has it right, Craftsman skill is required. The Citabria has a couple formers, and the ribs crushed out, everything else was stick, sheet and block. Nothing interlocked, and it takes some practice to get the fuse just right before gluing it up or the entire thing will be off. It's like a Skill Level 4 plastic kit, if built by skill level 1, it wont fly, skill level 2, it might fly, look like crap, and not fly very well, skill level 3, will fly well, but not look very good.

I read that and laughed out loud. I know those guys. And you're right, they really put their heart into it.

Yes, it's the RC58 kit. Just a box of balsa and plans with an instruction book. The ribs were the only formed part. Go ahead and use the photo. I'll toss up a "naked wood" photo also.

I can't help but wonder if the cost of balsa had something to do with the change away from big blocks of balsa to carve out parts. Can you imagine what the wood in a kit like that would cost today?

Yeah, not really sure just how it happened - almost looks like a double post.

Hey, this is what happens when you're old and senile. And to think, this is one of my BETTER days.

Probably another example of why I've got 3 planes on the repair board right now too.

What ever you do, try not to glue all three together as one! Makes it hard to tell which one is actually flying and what others are just along for the ride.

Sad to say I crashed my Kadet Senior Sport last year and she is still waiting to be repaired. I am no good with woodworking, but I can build the heck out of an ARF, so I'm waiting on a club member to look at my Senior Sport. I have temporarily replaced her with a Kadet Seniorita Sport, but she doesn't get much attention these days as my piloting skill have finally reached a point where I can fly low winged craft now without issue. I have a SIG/Seagull SpaceWalker II ARF with a Saito 56 that I love flying and am waiting on another club member to build a SIG Four Star Forty for me. The Four Star is getting a Saito 56 GK. Love to read about everyone's SIG planes on the forum.

I've been flying for 25+ years. I have two Kadet Senior Sports and I still enjoy flying them. One is glow powered. The other, electric. I'm considering the Seniorita Sport, too.

As you can see, I enjoy the way that these air frame fly. You may want to give them a chance. They are more than just a trainer.
