I have the same problem with the 40 doing a knife edge, it will do it but sinks. I must have broke the trainer in it, as it does not right itself. I bank at 45* it stays at 45*. With the extra throw I put on the rudder, it will do some crazy wiggly moves which makes it look likes its being tossed around.

ROFLOL!

The Kadet taught me that it WILL do any maneuver known, but you had better have lots and lots of altitude as it takes significant planning and effort to get a 3 channel bird to mimic an aerobatic monster for a bit and all the while it is giving away that precious altitude.

The REAL hard maneuver was a snap, but if CAN be done if you practice it a while. One of the rules is that you must understand the usage of airspeed. Snaps don't happen at fast airspeeds with 3 channel birds. Control throws tend to be as much as you get and dihedral is for wimps. Oh, the other 'trick' is to move the CG to its aft limits. Makes it real twitchy with the big deflections.

When the Saito 65 I have in my SR was at it prime in power I could get my SR into knife edge but I could not hold altitude. No luck with the JRs no matter how much power I had up front, but they would spin like tops whereas the SR would only spiral. Got to wonder what low wing Kadet would do?

Ken
Hey Ken - y'know I love it when you pick on me, I truly do (guess I'm just a glutton for punishment, or somethin'). I had the Kadet Mk-II out just today, trying spins with her - among other things. Y'know, she's like your Sr - great spirals but no 'true' spin. Wondering just what I've got to do to get her to do it. I've got the control surfaces set just about to max possible everywhere - no spins. HOWEVER, I got her doing some GREAT super-tight horizontal 8's today with twin-rolls at the center crossover point, so it's definitely improving. Up to now, the only plane I've had that would do that was my CAP-21 and the Sr. Falcon. Now I've got 3 that'll do it - a flat-bottom wing (Kadet), a semi-symmetrical (Sr. Falcon) and symmetrical (Mid-Star 40). Lovin' it!!!!

I like the idea of a low-wing Kadet. I know there are a fair number of them out there - bashed in one way or another. I was actually thinking about getting another Mk-II and bashing it to re-create something close to a 1950's era Ercoupe.

I'll bet it'd be a great flier.

This is my first post to any RC forum, ever. I didn't even have internet back when I flew RC Glow last. I got the RC flying bug, again. Last time I flew RC was Summer 1994 (not counting a couple of electric foamy glider runs in 2004). Back in 1994 I flew the Kadet Senior, my first RC plane I built in 1988. That day also flew a used Great planes big stik 60 which was built heavy, like a flying brick. I still have the Kadet. I scrapped and parted-out the big stik because it was built so bad.

So this year the RC flying bug was biting hard, and I have made a bunch of orders recently! I joined two local clubs, and I have a Sig order coming tomorrow; a Sig Somethin Extra, and I just had to order a Kadet Senior wing kit so I can make an ailerons & flaps wing.

The Kadet Senior paved the way to an FAA Multi/Instr/Commercial rating later. I still have it; sentimental value really... I took it from PA to CA and back to VA now. It only has two holes in the skin after all that moving. I will do a refurb and add some mods, and probably fly it again first to get back in the groove with the radio skills. I have a little ARF foamy electric and an electric foam glider to help with my stick skills retraining.

Yes... please sign me up.

I just happened upon this Kadet thread looking for Somethin Extra knowledge... very cool thread!

Tooooooo cool! Hey RD, welcome to RCU and welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood. It's always a hoot when we see someone new bitten with the bug - great sport, great planes (sorry, no pun intended), great fun. WOW, y'went all the way to the BIG guys - that's impressive. Yo brother, gotcha listed with #149.

The Kadet B'hood, as I've got it today:

RDG... That's awesome! I am doing the same thing. I have a few days off and starting on my Kadet Sr. Yep, ailerons and flaps make this fantastic plane perfect.
My daughter is wanting to fly so I am tempted to build a 3ch wing to make her experienc better... But going for the 4 ch and leaving some dihedral in it.

Dave, I have fond memories of the Ercoupe. The full scale was a fantastic flyer. Would be some work but a great subject.

Yeah, the Ercoupe is a great subject to play with. I had an old deBolt Ercoupe many years ago, long before I got into RC, and flew it as a CL plane (Fox .15RC engine, 3-line system) - loved every minute of it. If I had access to the old SIG Stratus (and YES, I know there's one going for an outrageous amount on the bay) I'd just go with that, but bashing a Kadet to "Stratus-like" will be fun too. Definitely looking forward to it. Also, I've already been playing with just what would be necessary to do a conversion like that - doesn't seem to be very much at all, really, and the MK-II would be the best basic airframe to do it with - more structure to move around and play with than a Sr., Seniorita or the like.

Anyway, I've already gone through a fair amount of drawing paper on this little idea. Got the entire wing-saddle area redesigned from the original plans to low-wing configuration already. My biggest self-question right now is do I build the wing like I did with the Mk-II and drop dihedral to half what's designed originally (option-1), leave it as-is (option-2), or increase it to better match what the Ercoupe really has (option-3). I dunno, but I'm thinking somewhere between #2 & 3. Gonna depend on which way my liver's pointing when I actually do it, I guess.

Already have an engine on stand-by, OS46AX that would be mounted inverted, but thinking about a 4-stroke OS56FS - inverted. Anyone got any idea how a 56FS would perform if mounted inverted?

Default Kadet Senior long flight

I've trained about 45 people with my Senior Kadet, kit built in 2000. I've been flying since 1980. I've never crashed the Kadet. It gets to fly at least every other weekend. 10 oz tank with an average of 54 minute flight to empty on a .40LA. I have not seen any electrics go that long on a battery. Most my nitros have a 20 minute flight time. I do fly both nitro and electrics, but now I'm getting off subject. The Kadet flies well off floats too. My take off roll is about 12 feet, 5 feet on a windy day. - Vince

I understand the Ercoupe doesn't have rudder pedals and instead had rudders linked with the ailerons through the wheel, evidently to make it easier to fly/drive like a car. I would guess that is the reason for the high dihedral. It would be interesting to build one with linked rudder.

I am curious too about this. There is the NGH GT9 9cc which is supposed to have the power of a wimpy .40, and takes fiddling to run properly (i've read). Then there are a few in the 15-17cc range, and the popular DLE 20cc which may be a bit large for an LT40. but may be OK inverted (and dragging near the ground) with a modified cowl. I wish these little engines had slanted plugs. Is anyone using a gasser in a Senior? Also the smaller gassers may have a bushed big-end on the crank, so may need a 20:1 oil mix.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/browse/p...gines-10001050

If see two planes with this engine, it seems to run well and would easily power a LT-40.

How about the Evolution 10GX 10cc 2-Stroke Gas Engine. About as small a gasser as there is. Power should be about right.
http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...ngine-EVOE10GX

Or the NV GX-40 RC BB Revlite. A gas engine that uses a glow plug. It is strong and light. Install it as simply as a glow. They run real good and reliable. from all that I have read.
http://www.nvengines.com/index.php?p...mart&Itemid=65

The Evo would be more suitable for a SR and the NV for for the smaller Kadets. They are forums for both engines.

Or a CDI converted .52 FS. More power than gas, with very good economy. The Evo 10 would be ideal and is what I am thinking of using on the T-cips when it comes in.

That's correct. I've heard stories that the Ercoupe, at one time, didn't require a pilot's license to fly, just a drivers license - it was labeled "uncrashable". I gotta admit that I've got my doubts (serious ones) as to the accuracy of that though.

Yeah, I will definitely interlink ailerons and rudder. It COULD be done with a 4-ch radio but I think I'd prefer a 6-ch computer so I can adjust the variables. Been looking around for some kind of info on how the original Stratus set up the linkages on their twin rudders - something I've never done. A bit of expertise from all y'all on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Vince - y'need to be in on this too, along with all us Kadet-lovers. I've gotcha listed with #150, welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood!! I gotta say I'm impressed with a Sr. running on a 40LA - you must have a GREAT runway, and a very lightly-built Sr. Well done!!

Naw, I doubt there's a battery out there (yet) that will run as long as a nitro on any given plane. There will be, for sure one day, but not yet.

Anyway, with Vince in - here's the SIG Kadet Brotherhood, as I've got it today:

That would be an excellent approach

Hey Dave I have to agree with you on using a computer radio to mix for you. Far easier and gives you great control of the mix. A flip of the switch and you are back to normal 4 channel setup.

I wish these little engines had slanted plugs. Is anyone using a gasser in a Senior? Also the smaller gassers may have a bushed big-end on the crank, so may need a 20:1 oil mix.
I saw a Senior with, I believe, a 50cc on the front. If you think about it, it has a huge, thick 79" wing, so that wouldn't be that unreasonable. He had reinforced the nose a bit and converted it to a tail dragger. Probably had ailerons as well, but I don't remember. I always thought a Senior with a 30cc and larger control surfaces would make a really fun plane, but I have too much fun with my stock one to ever want to convert it that far.

Yeah, but I doubt I'd ever flip the switch - really - unless I was trying a totally off-the-wall maneuver, which is something I'd really have to think about.

OK, got it! I'm trying to picture knife-edge flying, or a Lomcevic with this kind of set-up. But shoot, I can't do those things with my present Mk-II either. First, I've got to get this thing re-designed/bashed, then built, then maidened. Once all that's done (probably a year from now) we can play with maneuvers. BUT, it's a blast thinking about it.

Not I Jim. I can't for the life of me figure out what happened to mine. I have plans (very faded and can barely see the lines) dating from when I was in my teens from the kits I built or the plans I ordered for scratch builds.

The plans are available from sig [TABLE="width: 605"]
