The kit recommends making the flying wire using 1/6 piano wire. Is there any reason I should not use a heavy braided cable instead.

Many owners of this plane have gone away from the music wire and switched over to braided wire.
Balsa USA actually sells the conversion kit with the crimping tool. I still have the music wire on mine and they are a pain to assemble and add to the set up time at the field.
