Cheers, folks; I've now got two new methods to try. Our eldest had a go this evening, and managed, twice in a row, to painstakingly peel off the backing, using the sharp blade method, but with much screwing up of eyes and not a little light blasphemy. He used to work for a firm that puts photos onto the sides of panel vans, trucks etc, and so has some experience with handling film sheets.
If there's any more tricks of the trade, I'll take 'em on board too, though.
