Default Sig 1/3 Spacewalker, sports scale; Diary of a build

I will be building the Sig 1/3 scale Spacewalker as a sports scale build. The kit was ordered today and I will be using a OS 40cc four stroke gas engine on this plane. I wont go overboard on this build, just my usual scale details for the control surfaces. I will be doing a one piece wing for ease of construction and field setup. I have a 10' trailer so transport wont be a problem. I will be using the Aero works cub gear and cover with fabric and paint. I haven't picked a scheme yet but that will come. The kit should be here in a week or so.

I want this to be a quick build so this should be fun. Vincent and Leroy have done a great job on there 1/4 scale Spacewalkers and I will be using there build to help me along. I have wanted to build this from day one so I am excited to finally do it. Kelvin at Keleo Creations is building a pitts style muffler for the OS40cc so that will be going on this engine.

If you would rather have a landing gear specifically made for your 1/3rd scale SW,
I have a Bob Shattlerow, custom made, coil sprung unit I may be able to part with.
If interested, please email me at [email protected].
Thanks.

TB, My 1/3 Spacewalker balanced with an old Sachs 4.2. Since you are using a smaller engine, I suggest that you do your best to keep the aft section light.

The landing gear that DRCRAIG is offering you is an excellent choice. I've used Shattlerow gear on a few airframes, and have been very pleased with the quality.

Here's a link to my build thread, if you'd like to look at it for referance. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1356049

Thanks Tom, yes I have been reading your thread. I may leave some room for a steel plate if I need weight up front to balance. My AW cub was designed for a DA 50 and it balanced fine with the 40, no weight needed.

The balance is nothing to worry about. It's just something to keep in mind.

I'll bet that your 4 stroke gasser will sound great !

Yes it does, one of the reasons I am building this bird, also I cant wait to hear it with the new pitts muffler that Kelvin is building me.

Subscribed TB. I just finished with my 1/4 scale SW and I may want to build the 1/3 scale at a later date...

Kit is in the mail from Sig, I'm done with my 120cc Sbach so I'm feverishly working on my jug to get it flight ready so I can get to the SW. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it as fare as modifications, scale details and such. Changed my mind and I'm going to do the three piece wing, fabric covering for sure, going to play with the scale hinge lines and linkages. I would like to not have any exterior servos and servo arms. I have the main gear (AW gear) and the tail gear also. Might ask Chad to do my instrument panel. I may do a custom scheme and have Amy the air brush artist do a some cool artwork. How is the FS Fiberglas cowl and wheel pants? Not sure what I will do with the wing tips but most likely balsa. Might do nav lights, and trick out the cockpit.

Wish they came with the 1/4 scale, they are all ABS and it's close to $80.00 to replace them with fiberglass, I did buy the Specialties cowl for $38.00 and it's really nice.

Ok so a few days ago I went to the Sig website to order my kit, it says it is out of stock so I sent an email asking when it would be in stock. Then the next day I called to ask when it would be back in stock, she said they have a few kits on hand so I ordered one, it was shipped yesterday. I received a reply to my email saying "As of right now, SIG Manufacturing does not have plans to restock this kit".

Sincerely,SIGPlanes.com

So it sounds like they are dropping the 1/3 scale kit.

Keep an eye out on the secondary market. They pop up from time to time.

I could be wrong but I don't think Sigplanes.com is synonymous with Sig Mfg. You may send an email to Sig directly before you get too worried the kit is being discontinued.

Sig's website is WWW.Sigmfg.Com

Fortunately I have my 1/3 scale kit waiting for my next build.

So I have been doing some research and I see that some full scale builders of this kit are using the Fries type aileron design. I have never done this type and might try it to see how it works on models. The standard pocket hinge would work and would be the easiest, and I will do that on elevator and ruder. Also the linkage, I see that some are doing pull pull on elevator and was thinking that might be cool but most likely a single carbon fiber push rod. And for the gear the Robart Balsa USA 1/3 gear looks like this might be the one, and with some modification to springs instead of O rings. The cockpit will be simple (for now) just a panel and seat back.

Yesterday I flew my AW cub and leaned out the OS engine and it was screaming, pulled that 20lb plane around with authority, so I am feeling good about it. I think a 19x8 prop will be good.

Chad does excellent work. You can't go wrong by using his products.

Have you considered building your own instrument panel ? It's not hard, and it's a fun project.

Nice job on yours Tom, yes I think he will be doing the actual gages and other details, I will cut and make the panel most likely. BTW you do excellent work too.

My kit came today

That was quick, I just ordered it Monday!

After looking at the plans and the wire gear that came with the kit it looks like my AW Cub gear will work. The 1/3 cub gear would be to big. Time to get busy, I want this bird done by the first of next year

Last weekend I went to one of the local fly-ins. There was a really nice Sig 1/3 Spacewalker there. I have seen the plane many times over the year but I paid some special attention to it this time. I watched a few flight get put on the model and I am really excited to build mine. Looks like a really gentle and predictable flyer.

I don't know the pilot and I have no idea what motor he had, but it flew great.

He was making some really great landings, settling in for some great three-points.

That's a nice kit! I bet it flies a lot like a chippy, my chippy was solid as a rock and never misbehaved, SDP I bet your going to do an amazing build on yours, can't wait to fallow that one!

I am negotiating to buy a 1/3 kit now. Assuming I am successful, I am considering a 40 cc twin from Valley View. Any comments on this combo?

I have a 1/4 SW from Seagull, and it flies beautifully on 22 cc Mintor. Very scale like. Not overpowered, and I did not want it to be. Perfect combination in my mind.
